Anorexia is different from any other mental illness - with other illnesses - they have to take drugs to stop it ( therefore i think its more out of there control ) with anorexia - there eventuall able to stop it with counseling. I believe a DISEASE should not be able to be cured through counseling.

i agree. i dont believe it is a disease. i put that along with the media calling obesity an epidemic. epidemic is something affecting a large group of people through it being contagious. how do you catch obesity?

i consider it a mental illness, not a disease. a diesease is cured with antibiotics and medicine, not counseling. i also do not feel sorry for people that are weak minded enough to fall into something as ridiculous as anorexia or bullemia. they did choose that path, yes, with the aide of media and society, but they chose it anyway.

Anorexia is a symptom, not a disease. There are multiple conditions that have anorexia as a symptom: cancer, intestinal problems, AIDS etc. Those girls that you are referencing have a mental illness that is presenting itself as anorexia or bulimia. They constantly feel that they are inadequate and feel that if they were just a little thinner, they would feel better. They look in the mirror and see themselves as fat while the rest of us see every bone in their pitiful, pathetic bodies. I agree that they do this to themselves but I'm not sure that they can stop without being forced into treatment. Too bad Hollywood and the media perpetuate this skin and bones ideal where if your bigger than a size 0 or 2 then you're fat. I'm more inclined to think that a size 8 or 10 is closer to normal but that's just me.

I agree that it's a choice and a weakness rather than a disease. I believe what happens though is that they get caught up into it to such an extent that it ends up consuming them. Same as an alcoholic - they make that choice to take that first step (first drink) and then get caught up in a cycle. Some people are just not as strong or capable as others and have a more difficult time with stress/self-image/day-to-day living etc. Nothing to be ashamed of, but to call everything a disease in today's society is absurd. A disorder in their way of thinking and judgment is more accurate, rather than calling it a disease.

On the flip side - just give it time and obesity will be called a disease. We (as a society) are hell-bent on making sure no one takes responsibility for their actions. Everything is a disease, disorder or syndrome.

Psychiatric Disorders can also be classified as a disease. Do people choose to be depressed or choose to be bipolar or even choose to have multipersonalities? NO. Even a majority of anorexics dont choose it. Society breeds them though.

Part of the issue with anorexics is that society instills in these women that to have the perfect body they have to be 5'6" 85lbs. So when growing up girls are taught that in order to be beautifil they have to weigh next to nothing. They arent taught to love themselves first and not worry what the rest of the world thinks but they.

I have sympathy for them but I also feel ashamed. Ashamed that I have to live in a society that has no conception of what true beauty is. A society that is so materialistic and full of corruption and greed. A society where the president thinks he has absolute power and is nothing more then a war monger. And worst of all a society that is loosing its moral and family structure.

it may be a disease, but it certainly isn't as big a problem as the media makes it out to be.

According to Wikipedia, the incidence of anorexia is .3% - that's 1 million people in the US. Since the incidence of obesity is 33% I think that's a bigger problem.

Instead of banning skinny models, lets ban rosie o'donnell

Some girls are choosing to starve themselves, but they don't have true eating disorders. Those with an eating disorder can no longer control the "need" to lose. The eating disorder controls them...AND just so you know, I am on 5 different meds to treat the eating disorder...get a clue!

How ignorant can you be?! Anorexia IS a disease, in as much as it is a mental illness that leads these girls... and guys.... to the eating disorder.

They do not choose to do this to themselves. They have an altered mental image of their body. Just like someone hears voices they are visually seeing themselves as fat even when they aren't so yes this is a disease. They do not chose to keep seeing their bodies as fat any more than a person can chose to keep hearing voices in their head.
