Almost all brand new computers boughts will have this auto-play enabled, but over the time, the owners may have disabled it. You can enable the auto-playing it back, by go to My Computer, double click on it, right click your CD player, select Properties, choose Auto Play, then on the box below, check "Select an Action to perform", then choose what type of file you want to auto play, for example: Music file, then choose your favorite player to play, and so on...click OK to save the settings.
If you don't want to settings, just click Restore to Default Setting.
If you want to temporary disable the auto CD playing, just hold down the Shift key while insert the CD, hold it for like 5 - 10 seconds, the CD won't playing ...just for this time.
Plus, even if the auto play is enabled, but the CD won't auto playing, it's because the file "autorun.exe" isn't in the root directory or isn't included, but it's not always happens. In this case, you will just have to double click your CD drive and it will start the CD or you can click the Setup.exe file to start it.

The autorun CDs have a file on the root directory named autorun.inf. This file can open many other files on your CD automatically, including an autorun.exe file. You can open the autorun.inf file in a word editor, such as notepad, to see what's on it. You can even edit this file and add it to your own burned CDs to make them autorun.

on your comp (win xp) there is something called AutoPlay, now if you put a CD in AutoPlay opens and u can select what you want to do with the CD (e.g. rip or play, etc), there is also an option to automatically do that action each time you put tht specific CD in - your computer will remember your choice, you can change in by going to My Computer and rightclicking => properties and look for AutoPlay.

Most cds have autorun installed which triggers the cd drive to start the cd. If that doesn't work, use Windows Explorer to see what's on the cd and start it by clicking on your choice.
