its that little black metal box sit on tv and does anyone buy them

the boxes dont belong to cable company those have been taking back nothing illegal

Very often, the box is still owned by the cable company (typically you have it on a lease agreement). I would contact them first and see if they want it back.

If you legally own the box, and/or it's really old, you're pretty much up the creek. You might as well have a mint 8-track player because cable boxes go obsolete almost overnight.

If your cable company doesn't want it back, I would contact local recycling centers or local charities to see if they have an electronics recycling program or at least have a better way to get rid of it than throwing it in the trash.

The cable company always takes them back-- usually they will even come and pick it up-- they should ave scheduled that with you when the cable was disconnected
