Normally, fasting is abstaining from food for a period of time. Instead of eating, you would devote that time to prayer. Normally, you would drink water during the fast.

I recommend continuing your medications during that time as well.

You can also fast from things that you enjoy doing. Fast from television, or your iPod, or computer. The point of fasting is to get yourself into a position to determine God's will. Whatever interferes with that should be the subject of a fast.

It depends on your intention. Some people fast to protest an injustice, intending to die if it is not remedied. They eat and drink nothing, endangering their health. There are, as you mentioned, weight-loss fasts, which are configured for a specific physical effect.

I suspect your purpose is spiritual. In that case, consider the desired effect. If you want to experience hunger to understand and identify with the hungry of the world, you have a range of options, from cutting down portions to eating only at certain limited times of the day, to fasting completely for several days at a time. There are no rules, other than the effect you wish to bring about.

When fasting, the body is most likely to shed water first. If you want to alter your consciousness so it is less physically attuned and more spiritually attuned, a little dehydration will probably do it. But your judgment is also affected and you could suddenly get into a serious medical situation. So don't fast from water completely.

In fact, if you are fasting for several days, you need to make sure your electrolytes don't go out of balance. Fasting does no good is your brain shuts down. So some fruit juice may be a good idea. It is also wise to have someone who will check on you to make sure you're not in trouble.

You can fast many different ways. You can fast until noon or until 5pm for example. If you are taking medication, you can continue taking the medicine the way that you normally would and maybe instead of eating a whole meal, you may want to eat a few crackers or a piece of bread. You can fast all day or just however God leads you. You can also fast from meat and bread and just eat fruits and vegetables. So there are many ways to do it and God knows your heart and He will honor it.
When I first started fasting, I would fast until noon and then I went to 5 pm and then I went to all day. And sometimes you can start your fast at noon or 5pm. I am saying all of this to say that it is simply up to you to decide how you want to fast and pray and ask God for strength to help you as you progress.
It is a very good thing to do and God will show you many things and it will bring you closer to Him.
God bless you!

I don't know the specific Bible passages relating to this, but I have some very Christian friends who have fasted before.

You can keep taking medications if they were prescribed by a doctor and necessary.

You can't eat, but you can and should drink water. Only water.

There willl be procedures specific to your case and religion, but here's what your body needs after fasting:

For six days, gradually increase the amount of raw fruits and vegetables in your diet. To break a fast and gorge on meat, bread or junk food will be a disaster. Jarring the system this intensely, when the digestive system is re-awakening, can cause stomach cramps, nausea and weakness, negating some of the benefits of a fast.

First day after the fast:
Eat a piece of fruit in the morning and a small bowl of raw vegetable salad for lunch; vegetable broth also is good. Drink freshly made juice for the rest of the day.

Second day after the fast:
Soaked prunes or figs for breakfast. Small bowl of fresh vegetable salad for lunch. Vegetable soup made without salt at dinner. Two apples or a fruit salad eaten between meals. All this in addition to freshly made juices and broths.

Third day after the fast:
Same as the second day, but add a handful of dates or raisins.

Fourth day after the fast:
You may return to the diet you have chosen, but it is important to listen to your stomach, eat smaller meals, chew your food and eat according to hunger.

NOTE: When breaking a fast over ten days, a good rule of thumb is that the break-in period should be extended one day for every 4 days of fasting. When breaking from water fasting, go to a juice fast for two days or eat sweet fruits like oranges, mangos or pears.

Prayer during the time you would normally be eating, and not making it obvious to others that you are fasting. No bragging for example. You can drink water.

I try to fast 1 day a week. mostly juice fast. no meds. just prayer.
I have a glass of fresh fruit juice in the a.m. , green tea for lunch , fresh veggie juice for dinner, and lots of water in between.
I have done this for a long time and thank God i am healthy,
i attribute fasting for spiritual reason, to my peace of mind .
