Depends on what you are looking for.
Do you want to live right in the Eugene/Springfield area? Housing costs will be more, esp. in Eugene and the better parts of Springfield. South Eugene isn't bad and housing there is older and more affordable, except in the South HIlls area.
As far as the smaller towns in the area, Harrisburg (which is just barely into Linn County) has more affordable housing than most of Lane County, and is just a 20 minute drive from the North parts of Eugene. It also has excellent schools, and feels very rural, but really doesn't have much in way of stores ... you have to go five miles to Junction City to get to a supermarket or dept. store ... and neither has any clothing stores to speak of.
Another small town that would be affordable would be Veneta. Creswell is too, but it's not a small town I like personally, unless you are out of town a ways. Junction City is a nice town too, and near the airport.

Define affordable.
A tiny town in the middle of nowhere will have cheap rent, real estate etc but possibly heavy gas costs. Also, if I told you the cheapest, best place to live in Oregon and 10,000 people read about it and moved there, would it still be cheap? Also, I've found from personal experience that what you read on the internet and what a city 'is like' can be very, very different esp if you're looking at sites like Sperling Places Rated.

In the Eugene area, Springfield is more affordable than Eugene, and only a few minutes away by freeway.

no longer quite any entire cities to circumvent .... There are factors of Eugene and factors of Springfield which you possibly won't prefer to stay in. Creswell is extra blue collar, yet relies upon on your strategies. Junction city, Cottage Grove, and Veneta are all your user-friendly tiny city, with a stable stability of people who artwork in/close to city and people who visit and fro to Eugene/Springfield. Coburg may be a mattress room community of Eugene. Harrisburg, Elmira, friendly Hill are all tiny rural/usa cities, lots of people visit and fro, yet they preserve the agricultural usa city experience. upload what you're in seek of extremely, and doubtless i will advise some factors.
