I notice that some people back into parking spaces in parking lots. Is there any advantage to this? From what I can tell it take over 3 times longer to park and it's not any easier to pull out of the spot and actually looks to be more confined because the drive needs to pull out more before they can turn.

If it's a parking garage and you and bunches of other people will be leaving all at once (like from a sporting event), it's much easier to back in so that you can get out quicker and easier than when you pull straight in and have to back out. I don't think you have to pull out more before turning when you've backed in... the car doesn't change lengths... you have to be careful about the corners of your car whether you're backing out or pulling out forward.

I pull in straight at school and in public places. But at home (well both my apartment parking lot and my home driveway) I always back in. It's because when I'm coming home I'm not in a hurry, but when I'm leaving and late, it saves a lot of time. and it's just quicker and easier to pull straight out. Also, I park on the end spot in my apartment parking lot next to a barrier... to back out, I can't turn... I have to pull all the way back and then turn to go forward... and if a large vehicle has parked next to me, I might have to reverse and readjust again. So I always back in because it's easier and because I'm in a hurry when leaving, not when i'm coming home.

I think men tend to back in more than women... and in a lot of cases they do it just because they can and think it's cool. I'm a girl and if I do it, it's for a reason.

There are many benefits to backing into a space. When backing in, you do not have people or cars moving behind you. When you drive out you have full visibility of what is going on around you. Also, if your vehicle ever breaks down, it can be serviced better if the front is accessible. Besides, it really doesn't take any longer to do, once you get the hang of it. You will even find it easier to park.

I do it because I like to see what I'm driving into pulling out. Especially so when I invariably come out to find a hummer on one side of me and a suburban on the other(my life in a Walmart parking lot).

People back into parking spaces more often because when you leave the parking space, you can se the cars passing by more clearly, and it seems much more effortless moving forward when getting out of the spot. and i think it's also more of a driver's habbit.

It IS easier to get out that way, and quicker too, (unless the spaces are at an angle) when people are trying to beat the rush of other workers leaving work.

Its safer .. Lots of problems kids get backed over people leave buggys etc your mirrors dont show the whole picture.. try this ask someone to go to the back of your car walk backwards while your using your mirror. tell them to stop wnen you see both feet on the ground..Its about 40 feet,, every hundreds of kids are killed by parents backing out of drive ways and parking stalls.. dont rush the mall will be there .

I've never had a problem backing in. It's a lot easier looking out your front window for peds when you take off, than trying to back up with your head turned around backwards looking for little tots running behind you.
