I would recommend that you begin by contacting your local volunteer center. They can provide all sorts of one-time or short-term volunteer activities that match your interest and meet real community needs as well. Most volunteer centers have youth programs that can help you meet your school community service requirements, and provide additional youth leadership opportunities.
I highly recommend volunteer centers affiliated with the Hands On Network. Your affiliate is called Hands On Tampa Bay:

Through my volunteer center, I tutor children at the local library, enhance visitor experience at the local museum, package food at the local food bank, and a lot of other fun group projects. As a non-profit agency, your volunteer center can also provide you with appropriate documentation you will need for school.
Good luck!

Try your local United Way. They usually have a Volunteer Center with website that lists opportunities throughout an area. Also try volunteermatch.org.
I work as a volunteer coordinator, so I suggest being upfront about your requirements and the type of activities you would like to do. Whether you would like to tutor kids, plant gardens or inventory canned goods for a food pantry, pick something you like. Otherwise it will be a chore!

Ask your high school counselor.
Or, call the United Way in your town. Either should have a long list of places looking for volunteers.
I suspect some activities will be approved, some won't. Helping feed the homeless is usually good. Knocking on doors trying to sell your religion may be good or bad, depending on your religion, but schools usually can't give you credit for it because of the separation of church and state.

Ask to speak to the director of almost any of these organizations and they should be able to help you.
-food bank
-soup kitchens
-after school prgrams for elementary school kids
-senior citizens homes
-clinics/hospitals
Also, I am a member of the PTA for my children's elementary school and we are always looking for high school age kids to help us out for various projects that we do....fall festival, spring carnival, etc etc. We usually have the high school age people help set up, help out during the event, and then help clean up. I am not in the Tampa area, but if you check with the PTA of an elementary school, they might be able to help you out. If you are still unsure, check with your guidance counselor, or ask others what they have done.

Try a church, local salvation army, city hall.
The church may be able to give more places to go.
