In the US, I only remember the legal smoking age to be 18. I think that it helps teenagers to stay away from it for a little bit longer and it helps prevent life long smokers.
Granted kids are going to smoke when they are underage, but it is harder to get them and may not be constant.

Good Luck on your project!

Ideally, yes, but in my experience, people who want to smoke those cancer sticks find a way to do it, regardless of age. In an ideal world there would be no cigarettes, period...But here in the USA the legal age is 18 so at least the cops can do something about it if someone under that age is smoking. Yeah, I'd say 18 is a good age to go with.

if people want to smoke they still will anyway, here in america the legal age is 19 but i see kids as young as 12 smoking outside in public. They don't even care. I think that it would be a good idea to ban smoking for all ages but the idea is with so many people addicted it will not be easy to just take it away from them. Some people are so addicted to it that they will use violence to get the cigarettes. It's all sad but very true.

I live in Canada and the sale of cigarettes to someone under the age of 19 is prohibited.
I don't know if anyone has been charged selling to a minor. Kids are going to get them one way or another. Bans seem only to gain votes for people running in office. They always don't seem to be 100% effective.
Perhaps an increase in price of cigarettes would be more practical than an increase in gas prices.

taking up smoking is essentially a life/death decision - you literally take your life into your hands when you start. One may argue that such a serious decision should be made with legal guardians until they are legally an adult and able to make informed decisions by themselves, and therefore the age limit should be pushed to 18 because, at 16, it encourages minors to make huge life decisions without consulting parents.

I once heard that if you don't try or start smoking before 18, you have something like only 5% of chances to start in the rest of your life. Worth looking for stuff on that

I don't live in England, but here in the USA, they are starting to ban it everywhere, Hotels, Restaurants, etc. I don't smoke, and am against smoking in public places. 2nd hand smoke is more harmful than smoking directly (look at Dana Reeve).
