Until the start of WW II nobody could imagine there could be a war on such a scale again. It was called "The Great War" or "The war to end all wars"
It only became known as WW I during WW II when it was realised it was going to be equally bloody and involve basically the whole world

It was thought to be the war that would end all wars. It was the largest and most costly war, both in lives and money, the world had ever seen. To be the people of that time, it was a massive war. It affected almost everyone in the United States, as far as having someone in there family involved. Therefore, it was called the great war.

Because up until that time, it was the largest-scale war involving the most countries in world history. It was called "The Great War" and "The War to End All Wars" until WWII came along.

Never understood it myself.
The Napoleonic wars were world wars (the first), then the first world war should have been called the second, ditto the second then named the third.
The War was perhaps great for the Generals, after all at that time they did write the history books.

It was called the War to End all wars, since it involved all major super powers at the time and everyone thought, if war was this large scale, no war would ever compare after it.

Simply because it was fought by so many countries over such a long period of time. Such a war had never been fought before in this fashion. It was considered by the people at that time to be the last war that Human kind would fight because the death toll was so high and the destruction so great. Never before had so many countries become actively engaged in a war with so many enemies and committed so many of thier young men to a certain death.

WW1 was "The Great War to End all Wars". Getting its name during a 1 year long peace thready in Versailles (signed 1919), the ambitious goal of the politicians was, to utilize the horrible devastation as example, to prevent future wars, creating a new map and democratic power distribution of the world. This noble goal was soon unrailed by the bickering, arrogance and highly inflated egos of the four T. Woodrow Wilson, David L. George, V. E. Orlando and G. Clemenceau and their complete lack of intelligence, which is often found in powerful leaders. President Wilson, like Bush, believed, he was infallible. Despite warnings from more knowledgeable diplomats, he supported the biggest mistake in human history, singing that thready in that format. From Ho-Chi- Min, who was a young man then, whom Wilson totally ignored, to arbitrarily drawn borders, creating countries like Iraq and Yugoslavia, to humiliating a not even defeated Germany, Wilson made all the wrong decisions, making sure, there where enough conflicts int the books for centuries to come.

WWI, the great war, took the horrors of war to another dimension. Spanning the entire globe. A war to end all wars, it was also called.

I don't know. As a war it was pretty good but I couldn't really say it was a 'great' war.
