"You shall surely die" is a pretty stern warning from my point of view.

He did sternly warn them, but they did it anyway, and for those who still think it was a fruit eating sin, you need to check that out
again. Eve had sex with Satan, and the sin
made God so angry because this was Satans first attempt (in this flesh age) to pollute the pure bloodline, where through Eve down the ages, womb-to-womb, would come the Christ child.
God multiplied her conception; by 2 exactly; she became pregnant; one pregancy of two separate fathers. Abel was Adams son, but Cain was Satans son - thats why there was so much bitterness between the brothers.
This is also why adam and eve tied figleaves together to make coverings for their sin. Was it a mask they made to cover their mouths that ate the apple? No, it was covering for their private parts - those parts that participated in the sin.
God told them not to even touch the tree;
that word "touch" as utilized here, if taken back to the original hebrew, was "naga" which means to touch in a sexual way, as in lying with a woman for reasons of sexual intercourse.
This is information directly from the original manuscripts of the Bible.
The sin was terrible, and you can bet they were sternly warned.

God is love, what we do with that love is up to us. He cared enough to tell them that the tree was not to be eaten from, they were blessed with the ability to make choices. We instinctively know when we are not to be doing something, it just "FEELS" wrong. You know the feeling - nausea, a sick-to-my-stomach kind of feeling. We have 'a consience'. Your question sounds like it's stemming from a deeper question you have of yourself. If I submitted a question like this it might be because I do want to believe there's more to life than living and dying; feelings and emotions need to be set in perspective also. Another reason might be because you're not sure if God exists or not, and if he does, maybe you're worried about sins committed. You're human - humans make mistakes, feel guilty about them, ask for forgiveness, receive forgiveness, but ultimately God knows everything about us, he knows you question his existence, and brought you to a place where you can get as many different viewpoints as you can get to help you with your beliefs, and whatever you decide is your choice. Hopefully in the end you make a solid choice and are happy with your end result.

They had one lousy command. One. How hard is that?

The point of the tree in the garden and its forbidden fruit was to give mankind a choice. Would man choose the wrong or the right? Man chose.

That is the whole point. We can resist anything but temptation. We are being taught that we cannot in our flesh live to please God. That is why we need a Savior. That is why Jesus came.

How much more "sternly" does one have to be warned when they're TOLD DIRECTLY by God to ".......not eat of the tree for THOU SHALT SURELY DIE?"

If the Tree wasn't a tree, if the Apple wasn't an apple...if the Serpent wasn't a serpent...if the Garden wasn't a garden, what would they be? Think less literally and more metaphorically or symbolically...

Good question.
If a child was running out in front of a car, I'm sure people would make it known loud and clear that his life was in danger.
All in hind sight I guess, little rodent!

He is God, a simple warning should have been more than enough to convince them to stay away. I know that it would keep me from eating anything around it as well, just to be sure.

Putting that damned tree in the garden was like putting honey on the sidewalk before whipping out the magnifying glass.

It was a test for them if they would obey a simple order. He wanted to say it so they knew it was wrong but were still a little tempted by the forbidden fruit. Its all about temptation.

Better question: God must have known Adam would eat from it...why bother planting it and warning to begin with?
