The ebay seller should have in his listing what the expectations are. Generally, yes -- you do have to pay in advance prior to receiving the item. You might send a certified check or money order (for tracking purposes)...but yes they will probably want to ensure that the check clears before sending you the auctioned item.
If you will be continuing to use Ebay without a credit card -- I would encourage you to do several things. Before purchasing an item -- what is the approval rating of the seller (I ONLY purchase if approval rating is 99% or above), how many items have they sold previously (See Ebay feedback from buyers) a lot or a few items, review some individual buyer's feedback comments (are there consistent problems, only great comments). For the most part Ebay can be a great and honest experience...but there are some very convincing dishonest people. Working with checks and cash is very difficult on Ebay for the seller and the buyer, and usually incurs a long delay (for receipt of checks and clearance of funds). That is why "Paypal" is encouraged (and it has some conflict dispute resolutions features also for buyers and sellers having disputes).
I hope your purchase goes smoothly. Definitely do some homework prior to future purchases.

You send the money first. Once the seller receives your payment, the seller should ship your item. Make sure that you have a record of payment. If you send a check, you'd have the carbon copy or your bank's record. If you send a money order, you should photocopy the money order (with the number) so that you have proof that you sent payment. If the seller doesn't ship the item, you can complain to eBay and send in your photocopied payment as proof that you paid.
I'd suggest paying through Paypal if you have a bank account. Paypal offers extra protection for most buyers.

You have to send the money first...my advise is to send payment via paypal you dont need a credit card to set up an account but you will need a checking or savings account. This way if the item you paid for is never recieved by you, you can get your money back from paypal and paypal will go after the seller

You have to pay first!!
If you have concerns about that, check the sellers rating to see how reliable they are. It shouldn't be a problem. But you always pay before you get an item!

send a money order and once the seller recieves your payment , he will ship. I would make sure they have good postive feedback (the # next to their user name) to make sure they are legitimate sellers and wont rip you off
