I just recently got a bad sore throat, but only on the right side. My ear pounds with pain, and my lymph node on the right side in my neck is very swollen as well. I went to the doctor, he gave Azythromacin that have not worked so far (and I only have 2 left, out of the 6 I was given). It hurts when i try to swallow food, and I don't have a runny nose and normal cold symptoms. I'm thinking it could be strep, but I believe he tested me with that instant test swab, and I don't think it was anything like strep, but it feel like strep. What is your input please???? Should I go to emergency?

Try a second opinion by another doctor. Sorry to hear you're feeling so bad, i hope it gets better soon.

Strep throat is not going to be a problem on one side only. The first thought in a person with your symptoms would be that you are on your way to developing a peritonsillar abscess. This is infection that has spread into the loose capsule around a tonsil and created a safe home for bacterial growth - the abscess or pocket of pus. Symptoms of ear pain on one side, speech changes, pain with swallowing ( occasionally to the point of drooling ) , neck swelling/pain, fevers, and a tight jaw all go along with this. Repeat evaluation is essential if this persists ( and I suspect by now the issue is resolved one way or another ) as the infection can spread to other spaces in the neck, chest and even around the heart in rare instances. Treatment is usually with drainage in the office or with tonsillectomy. Azithromycin would not be a very effective antibiotic for an abscess and most often clindamycin or an enhanced penicillin would be recommended. The bottom line is that you need further evaluation and treatment for this since your symptoms are not of the garden variety sore throat. I think you'll find the money wasn't wasted. Accurate treatment and diagnosis is only possible with actual history and examination, but I hope these thoughts are helpful.

all antibiotics take 7-14 days to take effect. since it is azythromacin it means you have an infection. He should have also told you to take tylenol for pain.

Dont go to the emergency room its a waste of money. Your illness isnt something that will go away immediately. Other then some tylenol maybe another antibiotic, a 500+ dollar bill and told to see your doctor you in a week you wont get much out of it.

Schedule a visit with your doctor. Dont worry its not strep.

Have him test you for mononucleosis and run a complete blood count. You get it from saliva transfer. That can include poorly washed glasses or utensils at a restaurant, not just from kissing.

I had similar symptoms when I had it.

Hope you feel better.

You should get checked out by your GP or an ER physician.... you may have an inner ear infection along with strept throat.... could be contagious for people you come in contact with.
