I usually don't ask them explicitly. I pretty much always have a conversation with a girl before I ask her out. In that conversation, I ask her questions about herself and her life. Girl usually like to talk to me, think I'm a good listener, so they usually say on their own whether or not they have a bf.

Depends. If you're asking the person out for just coffee without any agenda of more than that, then i guess it would not be necessary to ask. Having coffee is by far the best way to engange into some serious talking. You'll eventually find out his status while enjoying your frapuccino or latte.
