First thing to realize is the radar is nothing more than additional evidence based upon the officers own experience. In other words, he observes a vehicle going faster than the speed limit based upon his experience and training. The radar then "verifies" the officers first observation.

Officers used to allow offenders the ability to look at the radar until it was realized...the radar doesn't give evidence in a court of law...the officer does.

RADAR is an acronym for RAdio Detection And Ranging. Unlike LIDAR, police RADAR directly determines a vehicle's speed by measuring the b>doppler shift in its returned frequency (such as the increasing or descreasing pitch of an approaching or receding train and emergency vehicle).

Instant-on or pulsed low-powered RADAR has been in use for many years. For some time to come, this will likely constitute the greatest occurrence in any area that has not already switched exclusively to police laser speed enforcement.

Technology has advanced quickly with the use of LIDAR which uses infra-red laser light to determine speed of a vehicle. It is more exact in its' ability to be pointed at a specific violator without "confusion" of other vehicles in close proximity.

Some newer speed detection devices do have camera equipment associated with the speed detection device.

In all honesty, I have two suggestions:

1) Consider the fact that speed detection devices have been challenged too often to have not worked the "kinks" out of the system in court.

2) Look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself...was I speeding or am I just trying to look for a way out of accepting the results of my own actions.

Best wishes!

1. Radar detectors are illegal in Canada. If you are caught with one, you get more than one ticket and more trouble than they are worth.
2. It is possible to contest the speeding charge by radar if the device has not been calibrated regularly. You would likely need an attorney to make this defense work.
3. It is possible the officer may not show up for the court date and you may end up getting your ticket dismissed. (more likely in a large metropolitan area).
4. Plead 'nolo contendre' and take defensive driving and be done with it.
5. The devices compensate for the rate at which the police vehicle is moving if in motion.
