My home was broken into two years ago, and I got a call this morning from a detective saying he has my computer. I have some outstanding parking and one running a red light violation from 3 years ago. He wants me to come down and claim my computer. Could this be a hoax??? By the way, he called my parents house and another house I use to live at to try and find me...he found those numbers from only my name, no serial numbers on the police report. Also, I do have some credit card debt from a few years ago also.

You don't go to jail for credit card debt. ASk your parents if they can get it for you?

Or settle the warrants and stop worring every time you see a flashing light in the mirror

The police can lie about anything, but it seems to me this would be a pretty elaborate ruse for a few parking tickets and running a red light. Having credit card debt is not a crime at all; however, they could be trying to serve you a complaint if the credit company has sued you. Still, I don't think the police would go through all this trouble just for that. Besides, if he found your number, he probably knows where you live and could come to you if he wanted to arrest you for something. My guess is that this is on the up and up.

Yes, they can induce you to come in and get served. Nothing illegal about it if you have an outstanding order for your arrest. BUT, the violations you describe probably don't allow for an order for arrest (very minor traffic offenses and parking tickets). Are you sure you have no outstanding orders for your arrest? Check at your local clerk of court's office

This is no hoax. This is a legitimate effort to catch a criminal.
You broke the law. Now go face the consequences.

P.S. If he has your name and your telephone number, then he also has your address. If you don't go to him, he WILL come to you - probably while you are asleep, or at work or school.

Even if he is scamming go down there and get this mess cleaned up. I can tell you from experience these things don't even go away. The parking tickets alone could get you license suspended. Do the right thing and you will not have to live in fear anymore
Peace

could be either, I had a gun stolen when my house was broken into, and they called me three years later, I was the last registered owner so they told me to come and get it. but i know they have called people with warrants out for their arrest and told them they have won things just to get them to come in, and then they arrest you, so it's a 50 50 thing!!

Yes they can legally lie to you but it is against the law to lie to them. Kind of imbalanced, don't you think? I don't talk to cops for that reason. Just ignore them. And, god, does that p them off.
but moving violations are really minor. They might ask, but you're not going to be arrested. Unless they're major pricks with too much time on their hands, which is known to happen

yes and you must really be guilty of something or you wouldn't be asking this question. Buck up and grow up and be responsible for your own actions.

Would they do it? Yes......They set up stings....telling people that they have won money.....etc...... I'd just call them and say that the computer is out dated and you have received insurance money for the replacement of it and please auction it off.
