Your question is a great one. Too bad more people don't see what is right in front of their eyes. Of course Jesus said to sell everything or give it away, so why doesn't the church? Some even suggest the grand and beautiful churches are idols in themselves.
Why does the church need to pass the plate every Sunday? Why don't they just pray to God for the money?
Because of course, they know they are in the business of "fleecing" their sheep. All in order to gain immense power to gather more paying sheep.
The Vatican is more wealthy than any country in the world, and what do they do with it? Have you ever seen the Pope send care packages to starving children in Africa? Why not?
The Catholic church owns income-producing property, on which it pays no taxes in most places. Why do they need to keep asking poor people for money when they are already wealthy?
And if the people give money to God, how does it keep ending up in the hands of men?

The Catholic church is the largest aid organization in the world after the US government. A larger portion of their assets and money are spent on assistance to the poor across the world than any other organization in the world. Want to find a religion that really hordes cash? Try the mormons (wealthiest church/religion in the world on a per-capita basis) or the jews (also very very wealthy per capita).

The whole purpose of the church is to exert power. Material goods are a side effect of said power...Take a look at Roman Catholic history.

Which church, the Catholic church?
The Catholic church is wealthy because it plundered the nations that were conquered during the 16th-19th centuries under the guise of "saving" the natives' souls.
You may not like this answer, but it's the truth. Why do you suppose South America is Catholic? The natives were pagans before Spain invaded with the blessings of the pope.

the Church is in the world, but not of the world. There is a subtle difference.
ownership is not evil in itself. However, it is what the owner does with its resource, or how the owner obtains ownership, is what could be evil.
Scripture says that the righteous will prosper.

It's a business. Some of these assets can be sold off at a future date for a profit or be used as collateral, just like any other corporation.
