If you are mentally ill, you can only do what you are capable of. If there is a God, he knows if someone is mentally ill and I think he'd understand the situation.

Some people would say that it is in times of suffering and despair that the presence of God should be the most comforting.
But yes, I think I understand what you're saying. I have treatment-resistant depression, and there are days when all I can do is lie curled up in bed and take medication to dull the intense feeling of wanting to die. At times like that my soul feels utterly dry, and any spiritual activity is nearly impossible.
So the answer to your question is -- I love God (or in my case, Goddess) as much as I am able to at any given time, with as much love as is in my heart. And there are times when, in that pit of black desperation, I feel Her arms around me and know that I have not been forgotten. In those times, She seeks me out.
(AdoreHim... Down's Syndrome isn't a mental illness -- it's an organic developmental disorder. There's a world of difference between the two.)

I know a woman who is severely schizophrenic. She knows about God and believes Jesus is her savior. However, she cannot love God completely because of her paranoia; she is also too frightened to go to church. But what she CAN do, she does incredibly well: she's memorized nearly the entire New Testament and numerous prayers and novenas. When she talks about God, it's clear she reveres Him; but as I stated, she cannot fully love Him because He scares the you-know-what out of her.
Think of this woman and the fact that she gives God all she possible can. That's all God asks from each of us. What I can give may be more in variety, but my offering isn't worth more than hers -- both of us offer to Him with an open heart and that's all He wants.

I know a group of people who have down's syndrome, and other "mental illnesses" that worship and love God more deeply and beautifully than we who claim to be of "sound mind". They do love the Lord their God with ALL OF THEIR BEING- it is not by the world's standards- it is by God's. Look within yourself and tell me if you are loving Him with all your heart, soul , mind and strength- Child-like faith is what pleases God- He does not judge by what we are unable to do- He judges by what we can- what you call a mentally ill person can love GOd with ALL HE OR SHE HAS- do we?

what's the evidence at the same time as one really loves God? a million. One ought to provide up all experience amusement, e.g. watching television, going to events, going to eating places, ingesting, smoking, drugs, playing lottery, killing animals for excitement of the tongue, and specially sex existence. because experience gratification is egocentric, illicit and antagonistic to God's will. 2. to do not overlook that no longer some thing belongs to me/you. each thing belongs to God, e.g. the residing house, the vehicle, the spouse, the little ones, the foodstuff, etc. hence if I declare proprietorship of a few thing, i'm dishonest God and stealing from God. 3. No prefer to amass wealth. If i opt for textile prosperity, meaning i respect funds more effective than God and that i opt for to relish textile helps. One should be chuffed with in spite of God grant to our subsistence. i'm doing those 3 austerities for acceptable God, and nonetheless i'm unable to declare that i respect God. Congratulation to you for you do.

It doesn't matter... According to the Old Test, the mentally ill can not be in the presence of God... nor can the lame, eunuchs, etc...
