depression is an illness in and of itself. people who suffer from depression dont have the choice to be depressed.

I was diagnosed bi-polar and deal with severe depression at times. This is due to an chemical imbalance brought on by an abnormal growth in my brain that cant be removed. When I have my periods of depression and hate life its not a choice and sometimes I wish I had some other illness. Medication helps but this illness still affects my life and the people around me.

Sure medication helps but not everyone who is depressed is because of some unhappy even in their life.

Depression is a severly destructing and devastating illness. What other illness can you think of that simultaneously attacks emotionally, mentally and physically? It's the least understood and most under-rated illnesses of our time. It's estimated by year 2020 it will be the world's second biggest killer, through suicide.

Tis true. They should also look to lower their level of depression asap. I would begin with working out (either brisk walking or jogging) daily, and highlighting on paper, everything positive about himself.

And, of course, wake up grateful to be alive and be open to meet new people and experience different cool stuff (like when vacationing, or some funny odd event which occurs by your neighborhood supermarket..lol).

Another item is to set up a noteworthy goal for oneself to achieve. That's always a good motivator to stick it out and survive the grind.

It doesn't work that way. You can't shame a depressed person into being glad. They have a disease, it isn't just a frame of mind.
