I have eleven piercings, and I just switched out one of my earrings. Now the back is a bloddy mess, and everytime I clear some of the gunk off, more takes it's place. The gunk is not scabs, I know the difference. The gunk is red, and I know it's mostly blood. What should I do?

Get some saline solution - it will fix it right away. That's how I fix all my piercings if something irritates them.

Switch to white gold, yellow gold or sterling silver earrings and clean them everyday with a q-tip, but don't take them out, unless it's absolutely necessary. I have to do this because I'm allergic to cheap earrings...rhodium. Everytime I switch my earrings out and put in some silver plated ball studs from Claire's (and all they sell is rhodium with plating) my ears start getting infected again, so I have to put my other, better earrings in.

A lot of people, especially the professional piercers will tell you not to do this, but it works for me and doesn't cause problems, but makes things better...soak a q-tip in peroxide and wipe the affected area, then soak another q-tip in alcohol and wipe the area again. Do the same to your earrings. If you have sensitive skin, you cannot use this method as your ears will get irritated (I think this is where the pros get confused...they must think everyone has sensitive skin.) Or instead of this, you can take a small pirex dish, fill it with warm, but not too hot water and epsom salt. I've used regular table salt before, and it's worked just fine, but I think the epsom would probably work better. Do this as many times as needed, once or twice a day, everyday until the infection clears up.

I had one piercing that did this all the time, no matter what type of earring. When I pierced it, I hit a nerve, so it never fully healed. I took it out and I'm letting it close so I can do it over, a little lower. The rest of my piercings I did myself and only ever have problems when wearing rhodium based earrings. This can also happen even if you have it done professionally. My first set was, and it was always more infected than the ones I did myself...

To Nymphetamine below me...No it's not bad advice. Because I'm wearing 4 pairs of sterling silver earrings with 14K white gold backings and another pair of yellow gold earrings with yellow gold backings and I'm just fine. The cheaper the metal, if you're sensitive to it, then you are going to have an infection. Everytime I put rhodium based earrings back in I end up with an infection. Don't be ignorant...

And if my method is so bad...how come my ears haven't tunneled yet (I have 14 piercings altogether in my ears, some are close together). Or why haven't my ears fallen off?

Could be a few things and caused by a lot as well.

I'm not sure how old the piercing is, where it is, what you are using to clean it, if any trauma has been caused to the area or what style and material jewelry is used. If you were more specific I might be able to help you a bit, but I still can't see the area, so its hard to say for certain.

What you should do is leave the jewelry in place. If it is an infection, it could get trapped inside your body and spread causing numerous problems.

Start by going to the person who pierced it, they can tell you if its something as simple as a popped boil or a tear in the piercing or if its something you need to get medical attention for. Try not to panic and good luck.

Don't put silver or gold in it, that's terrible advice!

It sounds like you may have torn the skin, or popped a boil, as mentioned above.

If it's bleeding, try to soak up the excess blood with some sterile gauze, don't wipe the piercing directly, you will hinder scab formation.

Did the bleeding start immediately after you put the new jewelry in? Is the jewelry a larger gauge than you had before? Have you been drinking or taken ASA (aspirin), acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil)? all will thin blood and cause more bleeding.

Visit your piercer ASAP to find out what happened.
