My mom has had this for probably 13 years now, and has never gone into remission yet. I've tried telling her to try some herbal supplements or even using coconut oil, but she doesn't listen. I don't think she should have to suffer, especially for this long. Has anyone done anything supplemental to make theirs go into remission?

I have Crohn's Disease....just diagnosed a year ago.
I just went to a new doctor two weeks ago. He told me that if I want to avoid surgery in the future that I need to follow his instructions (75% of Crohn's Patients require surgery at some point and then on the average every 7 years after that to remove a portion of their intestines.)
He advised me to give up Milk and milk products like cheese, sour cream, yogurt, cream cheese, creamy salad dressings. He said that I could still use butter. Take a fiber supplement every day like Benefiber, Citrucel, or Metamucil. He said over 4 - 6 weeks to work up to taking 1 TBSP twice daily or take 1TBSP daily and eat 1 serving of All Bran or Bran Buds cereal with Soymilk (It must have 13 grams of fiber or more in order to count) He also said to take a magnesium laxative if digestion was still slow. He said to reduce the amount of the laxative once bowel movements become more steady, but to still take at least a TSP per day of magnesium laxative because it strengthens the colon.

He said that even though we don't like to talk about the output, we should be having at least 2 foot-long bowel movements per day. He said that patients that follow his instructions are much more likely to avoid surgery and death. Only 20% of his patients have had surgery that followed this regimen and also had only 1 patient to die. He said this one patient thought he was crazy and just refused to give up milk.

I am giving it a try because I want to live and I really don't want them to remove a portion of my intestines. It is difficult because I love all of these foods very much.

My doctor's name is J. Wes Jones. He has a book that is on a publisher's desk right now so watch for it to come out soon if you want to read more of his medical philosophy on this disease.

One more thing....No tobacco. I'm a non-smoker so it doesn't bother me, but if she smokes she needs to give it up. As long as she smokes it will never get any better.

This is in which you ask your dr. all of the questions you'll feel of. Write a record and make contact with. Each case is specific and there is not any method to let you know what your long run with Crohns will probably be with out your Doctor's know-how and abilities. He can let you know the quality. That is aspect in their duty to the sufferer,

My husband has had crohn's for 24 years. You can't MAKE it go into remission. She can only treat the symptoms which are very debilitating at times. She should take her medications and follow the diet her doctor gives her which helps as does avoiding stress which causes "flare ups". You need to be supportive, helpful and loving to get her through the bad times.
