I want a loyal dog, thats athletic, short haired, smart, and protective. I have younger nieces and nephews that come over often 4 and 5 and I don't want anything to happen to them.

Labs are good dogs and so are Dobermans. I think they both would be a good choice!!! My choice is Dobermans. They are very intelligent, beautiful. devoted, loyal and affectionate. They are also very protective. I have raised Dobermans around my children and grandchildren and Never have I had a problem. My grandchildrens ages are 9, 6,5,4. If they are trained properly they are very safe around children and no one will EVER harm them!!! They may not even let you correct the children!!! lol. Dobies are big babies themselves and all they want is to please you and be loved!!!

labs are very loyal, smart and athletic but nat as much as a doberman. Labs never harm children and in general arent very aggressiveso i suggest you get them espesially if you have kids. The doberman will definetely be more protective but can be more aggressive especially when it concerns kids cause they poke and prode dogs so you have to be careful what you decide

Depends on if you want a really friendly dog. Labs are very friendly and tend to love every one. It sounds like you should get a Doberman. They are great dogs and love kids if you socialize them well (just like any dog)

My cousins had a doberman and he was just like what you described. Yea I would go with a doberman if that is what you want.

If you get a Pup Doberman and socialize it with you neices and nephews early you should have a very protective doggie. But know that they are tempramental. Labs are less protective and are really really fun loving dogs.

Whatever dog you get, as long as you get it while it's still within 3 months of age then you should be fine. Me personally, I don't like getting dogs after 6 momths. Especially when it's a gaurd dog. I like pits and I have had my dog since he was 2 months old. I have neices and nephews and the dog never has done anything to them and they sure do mess with him. They ride him like a horse, lol. But then again, he has grown up with them and has become used to them. If you want a passive dog, I would go with the Lab, Dobermans are gaurd dogs. All dogs are somewhatathletic until you nuter them, then they become lazy, lol. I love dogs and believe any dog can be taught and trained. There are NO bad dogs, just BAD owners.

You need to research the temperment of the two breeds since both are good dogs, but one may be too aggressive for kids. Labs are usually great family dogs.

Definitely a Lab. Dobermans are not known to be the best around young kids, so unless you really know how to train a dog, get a lab. Labs are very sweet, they live to a ripe old age, are easily trainable, and easy to groom. I cannot even begin to extol the virtues of this breed. I had never had a dog before I got my Lab, (I have always been strictly a cat person!) and had no idea how to train them, but my Babe is such a good dog. She is great around all four of my cats, she thinks she is a cat!! Labs are also readily available, you may even find one at your nearby ASPCA, and there are Lab rescue organizations around the country. Good luck!!!

labs are really high strung...so they would love being outside and running around and playing. and theyre very loyal. dobermans you would have to worry about temperament problems like any dog but theyre more prone to snap at people...especially little kids who want to play with him. a lab would just jump around and play along with everyone most likely

Definitely a lab. They're very playful, but know when to be gentle, and are rarely aggressive. They're fun, protective, and all around just great dogs. Pure blood labs can get pretty big, so you might want to consider a mix.
