Yes, never date someone's old boyfriend or even crush if you care about the friendship at all. Even if it's been years, it will most likely not make a difference. Even if the girl says it's okay and that she's totally over him. There will always be history between them and some trace of possessiveness. There are plenty of guys out there. Meet someone else that isn't connected to a friend. Stay loyal to your girls!! Guys do this too. If they are truly good guys they would never go after a friend's old gf, even if they were really attracted to her. I know because I've been in this situation.
Friends are way more important!

It is most definitely the right thing if you value your friendship. Even if she is the one that dumped him, break-ups are always hard and your job right now is to support your friend. I'm sure that if you dated him she would have some resentment towards you, so why risk it

Depends on why she dumped him and if she still has feelings for him. But yeah, generally speaking, an ex of a friend is off limits unless she expressly tells you it would be okay.

Without any details, I would say it was the right thing to do.
Your friend needs a friend right now - and by not doing something that may hurt her feelings makes you a very good friend!

According to the "friend code", saying no right away is the way to go. However, if you like the guy and she doesn't have a problem with it, then go for it!

it depends on how long it's been and whether or not you really like him.
usually, i'd say you did the right thing by saying no, but i have a friend who went out w/ a guy who broke up w/ me, and now they're living together. they're good for each other; much better than he would be with me. but if you really like him, she should understand and support your feelings.

Yes, definately. You would break the friendship silent code if you said yes.

She's probably using u as a rebound but if you're interested you should definitely talk to her and see what she's thinking.

definitely. never dating a friend's ex is just one of those unsaid rules. you made a very good decision. i know too many girls who just wouldn't care and go after their friends' exes. thank you for being one of the good girls! =]
