There is a good likelihood that being on an airplane will not trigger your phobia. I have a fear of heights too, but have no problem flying. I would suggest that you do NOT get a window seat, but other than that, just relax and enjoy the flight.

The phobia for heights isn't the same as the one for airplanes. My sister is totally terrified of heights, but has no problems with airplanes.

Get yourself a seat away from the windows. If you are seated next to a window, ask the person next to you to switch OR close the window shade. I should think it would be helpful if you mention to the steward/ess that you have a fear of heights and this is your first time flying.

Actually, the heights in an airplane are usually so vast as to be meaningless when you look out into the clouds. Just don't look down during takeoff or landing. Claustrophobia (fear of small, closed spaces) is likely to be the worst problem on a plane. If you don't have a problem with that, then it should be ok.

I share the same phobia. I did go on an airplane once and it wasn't that bad. The pilot and co-pilot were friends and it was a small Cessna. I quite enjoyed it. I also found out that taking two Dramamine can make ya drunk as a skunk. Should have just took one.

That depends. My mother has been on an airplane and she is afraid of heights. Your best bet is to discuss this with your doctor.

It honestly depends on you. If you psych yourself out enough, you'll be afraid of heights in a cardboard box!

If you talk to your doctor about traveling and your fears, he may be able to prescribe a once-ever dose of Valium (so long as you're not traveling alone) to ease the trip. After that, it's up to you to control your fears, avoid the windows, that sort of thing.

Yeah I doubt you would "freak out". Most people wouldn't freak out as the fact that they are in closed environment that there is no chance to fall out. In fact i think you will like it. Very peaceful looking above the clouds
