Me and my friend are moving into a new apartment and we want the place to look nice but we also don't want to have to spend too much money. We're both in our mid-twenties and we want the place to look nice but not girly. Any ideas you have would help. Thanks.

Yeah, actually that is pretty easy to do. First and most important is getting a few pictures and things on the walls. Bare walls make an apartment look worse than anything. Pick ones that go with the colors of your furniture and stuff. You can't hardly ever go wrong with black and white pictures and black frames.

Keep a minimalist view. Too much stuff will make the place look cluttered and messy.

IKEA or Crate & Barrel...if you don't know where on is...find one. You can find a lot of fairly good looking furniture there cheap.

Old Time Pottery...another great place to look. They have much more than pottery and have a lot of good things to decorate with.

Lighting. Lighting is very important. Use it to highlight items you want to draw attention to.

Height. Add a few pieces of furniture that will draw your eyes all the way to the ceiling. If your pictures and furniture only go to eye level, then your room looks blah.

White greek columns and glass. I've see a lot of cool things done with those fake white Greek columns and a glass top. They can make cheap end tables or a cheap coffee table or most any kind of stand you want.

Some wine racks with a few bottles also can make a place look nice.

Covers. Covers or sheets over stuff can turn something cheap into looking like something nice. Many a decorator has taken cardboard boxes, chairs, or wood boxes and covered them with a nice piece of fabric to make it look nice. Just because you cover it with fabric doesn't mean it makes it look girly. I've seen awesome looking end tables made out of cardboard boxes with just a piece of fabric thrown over it. If you didn't lift the fabric up, you'd never know that there was a carboard box underneath that you used to put your lamp on.

Use some contemporary rugs to accent certain things...like under a coffee table in the room or under the sofa if the sofa is in the middle of the room.

Candles can also work...just don't go overboard with them and make sure to pick where you place them.

And if you want to throw a tiny bit of elegance into the room...maybe add an orchid or two or some greenery or some kind of house plant that is if you can keep them alive.

Try some earthy colors and some comfortable furniture, leather is good and don't forget the big screen and surround sound for the weekend games. A good multipurpose table is good, so you can use it for poker parties and a dining table. As for art work, something that's tasteful no nudes on velvet. Plants are good, it should look comfortable and functional a bean bag or futon will work if money is an issue, lawn chairs are out. And so is the cinder block book shelves.
