I would like to incorporate more cardio movement exercise in my daily workout. Is walking in place/marching forward a few steps, back a few steps, side to side/etc. a good, low-impact workout? I plan on doing this for about 30 min-1 hour along with free weights/pilates/kickboxing/etc.

Any movement helps! Yes it is effective. It's a good low-impact cardio routine and also muscle conditioning. Walking forward and backwards works your quads and hamstrings. Walking side to side works your inner and outer thighs. To incorporate it with weight training I would recommend do a set of weights, walk for 1 minutes, do another set of weights, walk - by going between cardio and weight training it will help increase calorie burn since you heart is going at interval levels and also increase your metabolism.

yes it is your body moving and that is always good. The change up of your walking in place targets different areas. If you are not moving that fast it would not be cardio but it will help tone your legs. Forward for top of thighs back ward back of thighs and side to side for the sides of your thighs.

Well walking in place is mainly a good idea for those that do excercises early in a day !! It plays a part in getting the heart-rate up- that & moderate/low-impact excercise...{OHSirLeo}`'R'`r,r`r'r.r`r',.-> ``[3/26/07] ``there can be only one``~!!!.,.

It is definitely effective if you get your heart rate up enough. Your target heart rate is based on your age. Every so often you'll have to stop and take your pulse. If you are in your target heart rate zone, then you are doing good.

Walking in place is great to do. Any exercise is great compared to none so go ahead and walk in place.
