Yes. That system was established in order to provide order during chaos. For instance, say that all of a sudden France decides that they don't like us, they send their military our way. The fastest and most organized way to establish armed defenses to back up what military we still have here in the U.S. would be to call up everyone in the registry of the selective service and send them to the nearest armory for weapons and instructions, training.
Yes, it used to be specifically for the draft. But now, it is a measure of last resort. If we did away with it, we would not be prepared for those terrible "what if" scenarios.

That _is_ the law and it should be enforced. BIK, I am currently against the drafting of folks into military service, but everyone...male and female alike...should jolly well serve at least 4 years in their country's service somewhere, perhaps a clerical job on a base or something, but universal service should be required.

If a country invaded us, I bet you anything that a LOT of Americans would immediately sign up to fight. They wouldn't have to institute an emergency draft.

In the exceedingly unlikely case that we were invaded.

No, either both men and women get signed up or leave the military to people who want to join it and not be forced in it.
