My engine light will come on and then my Jeep will start jumping in acceleration (seems like it is backfiring or stalling). It will do this a few times and then stop. Then when I'm stopped at a light, my RPMs will just go crazy and run at 2500+ and kind of jump around for no reason and while I'm in neutral. Once I put the clutch in to get into first, the RPMs will go back to normal. Any idea of what the problem is? It doesn't happen constantly but rather frequently. It comes and goes when it pleases....

I own a shop, and have worked on vehicles for years. The light that comes on means; it is setting a code in the computer. You need to go somewhere (like Auto Zone), and they will pull the codes for you for free, and tell you what is going on. I would venture to say you either have a bad throttle position sensor, or a bad EGR valve. The throttle position sensor works like a volume control on a radio. Turn it up it gets louder (goes faster), turn it down it gets lower (slower). If it is worn and has bad spots in it, it will act crazy sometimes.
Glad to help out, Good luck!!!
