I am in the process of paying off medical bills that went to collections. I have read other post and see that it does not hurt to ask for a deletion upon payment. If the collection agency is against doing this, what is the next best thing to ask for. I was unable to pay them because I was off of work on unpaid maternity leave.

If the agency is unwilling to remove the information from your credit report, contact the credit bureaus directly and they will offer guidance on how to resolve the situation favorably.

Since your bills went to collections, that would be categorized as negative information by the credit bureaus. All negative information stays on your report for seven years - no matter what. The best that can happen upon payment is having the bills listed as "paid" or "settled for less than full amount" (whatever the case may be) on your credit report. The collection agencies do not have the power to remove these and the credit bureaus will not remove them. They have to fall off after the allotted time.

YOu can ask, but there is no obligation and most companies just report the collection as paid.
