Most people who are going door to door or driving in convoys have a higher mortality rate than an intel person or a cook. But 11Bullet Catcher is an important MOS.
A lot of other MOS's are doing infantry work suuch as artillery, een armor. Basicly combat arms as a general field is where most of the deaths are but thats always a risk. Its definately one of the cooler jobs though and you move up in rank much quicker.

To the guy who said "obey orders, not think." Um, who do you think gives those orders? They are senior NCO's in the Infantry who do. 11B is a mentally demanding MOS. There are so many variables on a battle field that you have to be aware of and things change in an instant. From establishing security You also have to be proficient at map reading, GPS navigation, FM and satellite communications, a variety of complex weapons systems and equipment as well as you tactical skills.

Facepalm. If that's what you think of then you definitely're a moron. the army makes up greater effective than 80% of deployed forces. The Marines make up below 7%. And yet you think of its in basic terms the Marines struggling with. seem on the casualty comments sometime hero. If we arent struggling with then why are we dropping the main provider women and adult adult males to wrestle?

The US Infantry is commonly known as the Foot Soldier, Mud Soldier, Grunt or Ground Pounder. In the 3rd Infantry Division he is know as the Dog Face Soldier (Audy Murphy of western films was a Dog Face Soldier and he to date is the most decorated American. Private Snuffy goes into battle either by being dropped by an Airplane (he is then know as a Paratrooper), carried in by Helicopter (he is then know as Air Assult), rides in an armored vehicle (Mechanized), ride in a vehicle not necessarily armored (Motorized) or he walks (straight leg). He has one major weapon system that he is an expert at and that is his Rifle. Infantry Plantoons have large and small caliber machine guns also. They also have grenade launchers. The Grunt is the most versitile and necessary element of any war. He takes and holds ground as no other military unit can do this. He is the back bone of any army. They are usualy the guys that do all the fighting and everyone in the military support him. Not me saying this, but it is military doctrine. All in the Army serve and support him. The US Cavalry (Tanks) support him by making sure no other tanks can kill him. The Artillary prepares the battlefeild for him and so on. The Air Force supports him, by taking him to war and supporting him with the worlds best air support. The navy supports the Infantry although the Navy has its own infantry known as the US Marines. Yes, the Marines are Infantry also. So you have two serviced having Infantry Branches or in the case of the Navy the Marine Corp. Most countries do not have Marines as the are known as the Naval Infantry. No country can defend itself without the Infantry. The are always were the fighting is done, they are the only ones who are capable of totaly destroying the enemy. No one else, no other service or branch of service can do this. Many armys have tried and have been defeated. Also, the Infantry has special units. These are the Green Berets (special forces and they are infantry), Army Rangers (light infantry, responsible for deep enemy penetrations and recon). Again the 82nd Airborne (Parachute Division). I will not forget the US Marines as they are an Infantry unit 2nd to none. When I speak of Infantry I include the USMC.
The Army has branches. Infantry, Armor (Cavalry), Artillery, Corp of Engineers, Aviation, Special Forces, Quartermaster, Finance, Chaplain, and so on. The Infantry is light blue and the Cavalry is yellow. The origins of the yellow ribbon come from the days when women would wear yellow ribbons in their hair for their troopers, far far away. Sorry as I am retired Cavalry.
The Infantry Branch and 11 Brave MOS is the toughest and most demanding of any in the military. These guys are tough, survivors who put their lives on the line every moment in battle. They have nothing to protect them other then the clothing on their back. Most do not have the courage and guile to be an Infantry men. These guys enjoy what they do and would not have it any other way.
Always Support the Infantry as they put Mission First, Never Admit Defeat, and Never leave a comrade.
An old source of pride for these guys is an incident that happened at the Battle of Bastonge. The 101st Airborne (Infantry Division) had held key ground preventing the Germans from breaking through the Bulge at the Battle of the Bulge. They suffered enourmous casulties, froze in the winter weather for weeks. George Patton sent the 37 Armor Regiment to Relieve them (although they are claimed to have relieved them, the 101st was holding there own). When the Tanks arrived and saw the first Grunt in his fox hole, the Tank Commander asked who are you and where is the enemy the Trooper stood up out of his protected fox hole and said "I am the 82nd Airborne "Follow Me". The motto of these guys is "Follow Me". Everyone supports (all military units) them and everyone follows them into battle. They are always the first in and last out.
It was my privledge to have one as a father and serve with these guys for 20 years.

Short answer...Fight and win wars...i.e. kill the enemy..most soldiers use the Infantry as a entry point into the Army because it offers a large bonus and the College Fund, along with the G.I. Bill...then after they do their first enlistment in the Infantry, they reclass into something they can do on the outside...and yes you can get killed doing it...
