Buddhism is not the only religion that believe it is the worst sin.
It is the taking of a life and is a waste of what could be a beautiful life. I do not believe it is the worst sin and I also believe that people who do this, are not really in a right state of mind, therefore, to me, are forgiven.

My religion is Spiritism and we believe suicide to be the worst thing a person can do, for sure.

When someone kills her/himself, the spirit goes to a dark place, where the wound will hurt for a long time. People might think that suicide is a solution for their problems, but they continue to suffer after death and gets even worse. If they shot themselves the wound will keep hurting and bleeding. If they hung themselves the suffocation will continue to torture them. They stay in this place for months or years, depending on their faith and knowledge of spiritual things.

Spirits from the parallel world have said that 100% of suicidals regret one second after the death.

Peace!

Suicide is not the worst deed in Buddhism. The following deeds are consider the worst in Buddhism:
1.Killing of mother
2.Killing of father
3.Killing of a holy person
4.Causing a shism in the Sangha
5.Causing injuries to The Buddha.

Suicide is craving for non-existence which will cause dukkha.
Metta to all.

My friend I can’t answer your question but I want to make a comment. Here in my country the 98% of the population are Christians orthodox and generally is believed that committing a suicide is such a bad sin that a priest refuses to bury the dead person in the traditional orthodox way. And this is because it is said that God is the only one who decides when someone must die

In Mahayana branch: Suicide will lead into many other sins:
1) Cause great pain to your parents = killing them spiritually!
2) Can cause many other things to your parents!
3) Waste the life your parents give to you and only you, not anybody else
4) Waste the life that many living things desire like dogs, bugs, fish... Human life is precious but you waste it
5) Your fate may be related to others, you end your fate your self will courrupt the fate of many others and many generations since you never fate to suicide

I don't agree with the use of the word "sin" in a mixed venue where terminology can be misinterpreted... however it's non-virtuous because you're throwing away a precious human rebirth unless you're a highly realized Bodhisattva who understands completely the sacrifice you're making, AND are doing so for the benefit of all sentient beings (as in the cases of the monks who burned themselves in protest of the Vietnam war). It takes YEARS AND YEARS to cultivate a mind that understands Bodhicitta logically enough to be able to make such a sacrifice for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Killing any other person or your self is not acceptable.Suicide is killing your self and the karma you generate will make you further suffer. But it is not the worst sin.

Human life is so preciuos according to Buddhism.

Sin is not a Buddhist teaching. Karma is affected by one's thoughts and actions. Just like every action, it's ones state of mind while doing the action, whether a good or bad action, that matters greatly. Good actions can not be done solely to erase bad karma, Buddhists believe through meditation and self-enlightenment we must not just do actions, but realize why we do the and how they affect us. It would largely depend on the person's state of ind.

It doesn't talk of sins in the Christian sense just actions and consequences. Because you can never escape karma suicide is pointless. You just have to reincarnate in order to work through your negative karma.

Does Buddhism really say that? What about those monks in Vietnam who burned themselves to death on the street to protest the war?
