I think that if someone is intent on committing a crime, there is no deterrent value in any form of punishment. I feel that people will tend to act without fully thinking about the consequences for their actions or they feel confidant that they will get away with it. With that said, I think that it would be better to try and rehabilitate some of these people. Finding out which ones would be successful candidates for rehabilitation might prove difficult. For the rest, thank God that we as a society can be protected for awhile from these thugs.

Anyone that has done time will tell you this. Life in prison is easier than life outside "the fence." But life outside has rewards life inside the fence does not. If you get in trouble inside then you get thrown in hole and stay there for a couple of days. Being in the hole can get to some of the weaker prisoners, but what else can you do. It would be inhuman to beat a prisoner b/c he got caught gambling or doing drugs. The real punishment comes from other prisoners. Prisoners learn what true self perservations is and how affects someone and the only way to survive is self perservations, so that with in its self does make prisoner harden.

Prison life is not a real deterrent, to some it is the cost of doing business. The inmates are guaranteed three things, which they don't have outside. 1. Three hot meals a day. 2. A clean bed to sleep in. 3. The right to complain and be listened to. Outside, some are lucky if they can get one meal a day. Some sleep in a doorway or alley. If they complained they are ignored. Prisons should be made so that no one wants to enter in to them, and will not commit crime to get there.

There is a reason that prison isint "strict enough" A large majority of the inmates that are in prison will be returned to society. Others have said that we must make prison so bad that they dont want to return. That is false. We must train these inmates to simply get along in society. By making prison a place where we lock them up and throw away the key will only make them that much worse when they get out. Also, It creates an extremely hostile environment for corrections officers working in the prison. Most people say, how can we give them TV and cable inside prison? its simple, if the inmate has TV, cable, programs, school, and so on that they can participate in, it keeps them busy and keeps them out of trouble while they are prison. Prison itself is a "society" and by training them to get along there, perpares them for the real world. They learn that if they mess up in prison, they lose the luxory of TV or programs. So in the end, we cant lock them up in a cell and forget about them.

In the near future there will be two segments of our society the welloff to rich and the poor to very poor. If you have chosen to fall on the poor side of the tracks, prison is almost like a college education that you have to have under your belt to have any street credit at all. If you have not gone to prison and learned how to think and act like a criminal you will not make it.

Depending on who you are. If you are part of a prison gang or a group of the protected in prison it is not as much of a problem as if you were some kid from the suburbs who has no friends in jail it can be hell.
