First of all, what are some good stores to look at a variety of treadmills?
How much money should I be expecting to spend for a lower-end, but quality treadmill?
Is there any specific feature that is particularly important?

After running for years... from 18-42 I found that the treadmill that gives you the option to go from 5.0 to 6.0 to 7.0 to 8.0 to 9.0 at the press of a button is great so I can do intervals and repeats at 1/4 miles. I also heart-rate train so having a heart-rate monitor on the screen is also cool to have. You can wear the strap but not have to look at the watch because the treadmill picks it up. As far as cost, you get what you pay for. It will be expensive. Good luck. Sears always have pretty good ones. Also look in the paper classifieds, some times people have to move or are getting a divorce and sell theirs for cheap.

I suggest to just run. Start going on jogs in the morning, or whenever you plan on working out. As you get stronger increase the speed and time at which you jog/run.

If you have any knee problems, you should get an elliptical machine instead.
