I have been doing my research as well, since I am planning on joining the ARMY...one thing that I have started was running almost every night and working on my push ups and situps...in order to pass basic you have to do a certain amount of each within 2 minutes and the 2 mile run under so many minutes...still have to look that part up. My father was in the ARMY and he said that if he could do it all over again, the part he would do is the basic training, that was his absolute favorite part. Though there will be lots of physical work, a lot of it is mental. They are transforming the person into a soldier. Check out www.goarmy.com and there are a few clips as well as explanations as to what to expect at basic training. Good luck with everything and make this choice for YOU!

My sister joined when she was 18, she was very physically fit from track and field, and cross country in high school.

Lets just say, it'll kick your @ss! And the gas chamber is NOT FUN!!! Or living in a fox hole for 2 days.. She said her own stench made her almost vomit. Also you'll have wake up calls at 4 and 5 in the morning to march for miles and miles with 50 lbs on your back.

If you can handle it, your tougher than me!

I was in the NAVY, but my boyfriend was in the ARMY. He told me that the basic training first and foremost is to get you acquainted with military rules and regulations (Uniform Code of Military Justice), military terminology, then they will make you exercise to make sure you are fit and healthy, and they will teach you to handle fire arms and hand to hand combat depending what your occupation is.
Don't worry about sleep deprivation, they only wake you up way early in the morning for the first couple of weeks out of 13 weeks you will have in boot camp. They will be shouting at you a lot so that you will listen, because in the military, no matter how you hate some one, you will obey their orders because they are superior rank to you and you need to get to know your chain of command.
To me boot camp was like a crash course of learning, and my boyfriend thinks that boot camp was a cake. So, don't worry, it's all fine. Those who doesn't like boot camp or military is because they don't have any military bearing at all.

www.goarmy.com has a week by week break down (with video clips even) that is reasonably accurate on the fundamentals.

It's basically about physical fitness, training up on new skills and learning attention to detail at a level you would never have thought possible.

I had fun.

There are alot of demands put on you, but really none are that hard. You get to play GI Joe, shooting guns, throwing nades, digging foxholes in clay (actually that isn't fun). The mentality I had the whole time was that You don't have the choice to give up, and it makes it really simple.

my hubby just finished basic. He loved it. It is a lot of running and working out. You get to play with guns and run drills. The only hard part is not being able to talk on the phone.

It is a indoctrination of all ideas of individuality you possessed.

It is the altering of the normal human mind into an assimilated automaton obedient slave able to wield a weapon and controlled by fear.
