I went to a religious funeral not long ago, and the minister was preaching about Jobe for like 20 min or longer. Didn't think he'd ever shut up. I thought it was a little rude that he spent more time preaching to the grieving about religious things instead of focusing on the dead person. I've decided I don't want ANY preaching at my funeral if that's allowed. I haven't been to a funeral where they haven't read from the bible though, is that something that ever happens?

Most people around here have a wake or visitation, then the funeral is the next day.

For my preacher friends on here - What kind of god would send everyone to hell just because they believe that life ends at death? Uh huh, that's what I thought.... I respect everyone's beliefs, I don't think that they are going to hell because of their beliefs either. Keep on preachin' on, hipocrites... :)

It's why I've put in my funeral wishes that I have no service. I wouldn't want someone even suggesting that I'm better off and have gone to a "better place". Just cremate me and do something with my ashes. I don't care what. Heck, put them in the litter pan for the cat for all I care.

Yes it does happen. Just make sure your wishes are in writing. You will probably have to get a close friend/family member to do the funeral because there is probably some ministers who would refuse to do the funeral without reading Scripture.
I would probably do the funeral and just focus on your life.
The funeral isn't really for the dead but for the living to remember your life. This is the case for the the reading of Scripture of well. The reading of Scripture is to comfort and support those who are grieving and if that person is a Christian to give the people confidence that he is in a better place. However a funeral should also be concentrated on the life of the person, as I have said. 20 minutes is normal for a funeral talk, but he should have included information about the life of the person within those 20 minutes.

Its all about what you want, or your family. But the thing is a funeral I believe is a religious practice. If you don't want to hear about religion in a funeral, don't go to a religious funeral. Just get cremated., or tell someone to bury you in the back yard

Friends and family who respect an Atheist person who passed on would specifically request a funeral that is without religious readings.

It's your funeral. Have it any way YOU choose. Make sure your relatives know your wishes. And put it in your Will. Spell out exactly what you want.
Personally, I don't care what happens at my funeral, or even if they have one for me. The funeral is not for the deceased (they're dead and don't care). The funeral is for the living.

Don't worry, when you die you won't care what's read at your funeral or if they neglect to talk about each of the wonderful things you did in life because you'll be ROTTING IN THE GROUND.
Funerals are for the living, not the dead. They provide a small comfort.

You can have whatever you want at your funeral. Just make sure your wishes are in writing and your loved ones are aware of them. My mother has expressed a similar wish and I have decided to talk about her life instead of reading Bible passages.

I think you will need to have a humanist funeral. Look into it. That's what I'm going to do.
Oh yes, and Samurai is absolutely right - get it in writing, signed in blood, sealed in a vault somewhere, otherwise some busybody will ride roughshod over your wishes.

As the saying goes "Its your funeral." Just like in any other ceremony, like weddings for example, a person doesn't have to have any religious content.
