Isn't it crashingly obvious that atheists don't think there is any kind of 'life after death'? Even the phrase itself is an oxymoron! :-) Death is, after all, the cessation of life, by definition.

For people who have been promised eternal life their entire life, it's a legitimate question. And what better person to ask than an atheist. It's the only time you get the truth.

Death is the cessation of our *physical* life. Not of our existence. Existence can not become non-existence. Even our physical body continues to exist after death. In another way.

I must protest. Nothing in the definition of atheism says that atheists don't believe in an afterlife.
For example, I believe in a sort of afterlife. It simply has nothing to do with a supreme being. The entire Buddhist community would probably also beg to differ.
This would be why they ask.

Actually a life after death is independent of a god. Even the Buddhists have an afterlife.

Belief in an afterlife is deeply ingrained in many people. Hence it is genuinely difficult for them to imagine the cessation of life as a simple fact.

Some ask because they are seeking to understand you, and others may ask because they are being jerks. It matters not what you believe or don't believe to hurl insults at someone is still wrong on a moral level. So just ignore them and move on.

There are different forms of atheism. Just because I don't believe in God, doesn't mean I don't believe in an afterlife. I believe in all sorts of spiritual things. They just happen to coincide with and support scientific fact.

I just say reincarnation. They seem extremely dumbfounded that anyone can believe in anything diffrent from them :) i mean, seriously nobody knows what happends after you die, no one has been back to tell us.
