When you have lived in China for a while you will see that there are many different looks , even body shape, each region has certain common features like for example southerners are generally shorter and moon faced compared to the northerners who are taller and the woman have oval faces, the most beautiful women come generally from sichuan province must be all those chillies in their food.

if you spend a lot of time with a group of bears or pigs you will learn to tell them apart. When i was living in china i thought i could tell the chinese from the few japanese and i could certainly single out a russian from an american but the chinese often thought i was russian. They certainly don't all look the same though. You're just inexperienced.

even with microchips or spark plugs and sockets, an untrained eye just see's lots of metal stuff, but a mechanic can reach down and grab a quarter inch socket without having to read the little markings etched in the side.

I agree with THEGURU. He said it best in a very few words.

I am an Asian and I have the same difficulty as yours. I cannot distinguish between white Americans, British, Germans, French, Russians, Australians, Canadians, etc. just by the looks. They all look the same to me. I can only tell once they started speaking.

If you don't see alot of Asians, they may very well look alike to you. I have heard many people say that and I doubt that they have bad intentions in so saying. If you actually go to China, and are surrounded by Chinese all day long, you will see the differences. They all look quite different from each other but in ways that are different from how Americans look different from each other. E.g, in America, one of the first things we notice is someone's hair and eye color... OK, so most Chinese have dark hair and eyes.. But facially, they look quite different!

Actually they DO NOT! China has tons of minorities besides the HAN majority... You can find many different ethnic groups -- Miao etc.
So you just have to look closely even in one city especially in a big one like Beijing you could see these different groups...

They don't it has been well documented that then people of one race see the same race day in day out and come accustomed to there own any other people they see from another race they can't tell the different from one another because they have no basis on how to tell them from one person to another.

Simple answer is start hanging out more with asian people and you will notice.

How many Chinese have you actually seen?!! There are many many differences in appearance, cultures and language - not to mention dance, music and literature! Life and people in Xinjiang are uite different to Shanghai - both of which affect how people look. My advice is 'reset your bifocals'. And yes the Chinese think that we all look the same - 'yellow hair and blue eyes' -nuntil they are forced to think carefully about it.

They don't but it is a little harder for people who have grown up primarily around one specific racial group to distinguish features in a second racial group. The 'white' race is easiest to distinguish because we are now such a mix of differnent white races (red heads, blondes etc) so the differences are quite acute.

You mean like Yao Ming and Lucy Liu? Yeah, it's uncanny.

You know, I have a sneaky suspicion they manage just fine - and they can probably spell better in both their dialect and in English than you.
