Hi, I am involved in the skin health industry and would definitely advise you against using a sunbed once a week. We all know the risks of skin cancer - our skin "remembers" the damage, and our DNA may not repair effectively, leading to skin cancer - but what may not be known is that 90% of sun damage occurs by the age of 20, only becoming visible in your early thirties. Photo ageing can make up to around 85% of the overall appearance of ageing. It would be interesting for you and your friend to have a "skin scan" by a reputable therapist which will show up damage already done.

By far, the most damaging effect on our skin is UVB and UVA rays (I see this all the time), so what is a quick fix for other skin problems (and this is only for a few people - probably by stimulating the production of vitamin D - some peoples skin becomes more irritated) leads to far more serious problems.

I would suggest looking to other solutions that are far less detrimental to your body's largest organ - skin peels are now a very valid option and work far more effectively (and safely) for the problems you have mentioned i.e. blackheads, acne, and perhaps your friend may want to look in to this as it also help with the photo-ageing she has to look forward to!

Alpha Hydroxy Acids are safe, weak natural acids (Glycolic being the most commonly used - Mandelic acid is a new acid that is a non-irritant (no redness, burning, and very little peeling, for all skin types) - These have also become very affordable in-salon treatments.

I hope you think about your options carefully before you go ahead-if you do still go ahead with the sunbed option you should use protection cream (SPF 15 at least) but I sincerely hope you don't.

If anything, live with the blackheads now, have great skin later!

You need to be very careful, years ago my daughter had a skin complaint and had to go to the hospital for their sunbed treatment a maximum of 2 minutes a few times a week and it cleared it up that was medically supervised. I have a sunbed and I don't use it. I do go to a suntan shop and only go on the sunbed for a short time, I don't want a tan it's that it helps my arthritis. Be careful and try and find something else, I don't think it will help with your problem.

im no expert on this subject but i wouldnt advise going on sunbeds! you'd have an increased risk of skin cancer and skin ages more than usual. i dont think the sunbeds would have cleared up your friends spots and i dont think it would do the same for blackheads (though im not sure about that..) if you want to get rid of blackhead then you can buy treatments for that..if one doesnt work then maybe try another. im sure one will work!

Hi as with anything there is a risk, one day a week would be ok especially if you are on the fast tanning beds, they will tell you everything you need to know at the salon. But it wont remove your black heads, it will dry up the acne you have but Im affraid you will have to get them out with a good exfoliating scrub. But its worh a try for your spots, just remember to moistuires lots and use an anti ageing cream afterwards as you want minimise the appearance of wrinkles as you face ages quicker with the sun.

While it may clear up your skin in the short-run by drying up excess oil on your skin, the long term effects of tanning are skin cancer, wrinkles, and sun spots (moles/freckles). If you decide to use the sunbed, be sure to wear SPF on your face and moisturize your entire body before and after tanning. Good luck.

Bad. Tanning bed increase the chances of melanoma (fatal skin cancer) by 55%. Skin cancer is preventable--unlike other cancers. Don't expose yourself to harmful UV rays.

Young people just never think it will happen to them and it does. There are thousands of people in their 20s with skin cancer.

Bad, they age your skin prematurely and increase skin cancers, both malignant melanomas, basal cell carcinomas and epithelial carcinomas.

Better to stay pale and interesting or use a chemical tan instead.
