Have you checked the driver:

To open Device Manager, click Start,
point to Settings,
and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Hardware tab,
click Device Manager.
Right-cl the item to be checked and select Properties.

You should be told whether or not the item is working properly. You can also update the driver from here.

It sounds to me as though the drive you have isn't one that can burn. Do yourself a favor and download a free program known as the "Belarc Advisor" and run it. It'll give you a report of everything you have on your computer, both hardware and software, and that way you can determine what type of drive you have. If it is indeed a drive capable of burning, then you'll probably have to reinstall the driver for it. If not, you will probably want to visit a site like newegg.com and shop for one there. The Belarc Advisor site is shown below. Good luck.

It usually means that the Drive in your PC is not a Burning based. In other words, it is unable to Burn CD or DVD's.

If that is the case, spend $30 and buy a new Drive.
