today I left my dog out and when he came back in he was stinking. There was the most awful smell of him.Its not the first time this has happened what could he be getting up to. he was only out for 10 minutes, I had to take him straight up to the shower.yuck

if you have checked and not found anything in his outside area (garbage, etc) causing the problem, maybe a skunk or other animal he may be running into. hopefully not a bad neighbor. please keep your eyes open to all possibilities, your dog could be getting himself into something bad for him. please take care.

i have three dogs and if i think its the smell your talking about its fox poo and I'm not joking i live in the new forest and my dogs are always rolling in and it stinks they don't have to roll in a lot but when they do roll my god does it smell the only way i could get it out was to rub Heinz Tomota ketchup on it this was my vets idea and then bath them it got rid of the smell straight away

What did it smell like? My dogs seem to like rolling in horse an cow poo and anything smelly and dead. The worst is taking them to the beach and finding a dead seal. Ugggghh

a nice viniger and tomato paste bath helps. Contain him in a yard or on a outdoor leash. He found a dead animal, cow poo or skunk.
My dog got out from people being stupid and would come back covered in crap and stink like there is no tomorrow

WHen I let my dogs out htey come in smelling like fresh air. Is there a skunk in your area isthe dog antagonizing or trying ot play with the skunk?

Hi if it smells like a fishy horried smell, Its his glands, something out side must me scaring him and he will let this out of his rear end when he gets scared. My dog does it when he goes ot the vets if the vets scares him or another dog scares him then he does this. Its nothing to worry about but you may have to watch if he is getting tooo scared or someone out side is deliberatly scaring him.

You need to comb him when he come back.. When my dog smells, I or my dad comb him and the smell go away...
Try to take off all the fur that he no longer use by combing... often fur get smelly when it covered with dirt or moisture.

does the dog shampoo smell strong? if it is they dont like it all they will do is cover up the good smell with a bad smell trust me i was told in a vet.

Your dog may be digging at the site of septic tank backup or sewage backup. You better follow him the next time and see what he's so interested in.

Sounds like you need to either leash him and walk with him or search your fenced area for the possible cause.
Dogs love to roll in dead things...could this be the source?
