My favorite teacher was Mrs. McCullum- she was my sixth grade teacher (many years ago). The reason she became my favorite teacher was because she cared. When I began sixth grade, my grandparents fought for legal custody of myself and my sister. This involved court hearings, and my father threatened to kidnap me and even threatened to kill me (to prevent my grandparents from getting custody).

Mrs. McCullum one day, saw that I was upset about something and sent me out into the hallway. She came out a moment later, and another teacher came into the class. Mrs. McCullum proceeded to ask me what was wrong. I started to cry, and I told her what was going on, in between sobs. She said "lets go for a walk". We walked to the playground, she put her arm around my shoulder and she allowed me to just sob my eyes out.
I ended up telling her of the abuse I was suffering at the hands of my father, and she helped me to speak to the guidance counselor and then the principle, and even stayed there with me while I had to speak to the authorities. The whole time, her hand on my shoulder, giving me the strength and courage to cope with the situation.

To this day, and I am now 35 years old, I remember Mrs. McCullum and how, for that day, she stopped her own life, to ensure my life was going to be alright. From that day forward, she would push me to work very hard in school and would understand if I needed a few minutes alone in the hall to regain my composure.

I am now a University student, and every time I feel like classes are just too tough, I remember Mrs. McCullum and how proud she would be of me.

So that is why she was my favorite teacher- she genuinely cared about her students, and went above and beyond to ensure that I would be alright.

My grade 10 social studies teacher at Bedford Road Collegiate in 1988 - He's a big jolly man from Barbados. He had a slight accent, pure white teeth, black skin, bright smiling eyes, he was always more than fair, he truly wanted his students to succeed in his class, and more importantly, in life. I was 15 yrs old in his class, I'm 34 today. I had the blessing of running into him in front of the Saskatoon library one day last summer, and he remembered me too, he asked what I'm doing in my life and asked if I would be interested in being a presenter for their job fair at the highschool, I felt honoured to be asked by him because I felt he really knew how hard I tried to get the best marks in his class, I liked him and how he presented the course material, he helped us like learning; one way he did this was by going over the test material before a test - with it fresh in the memory, the minimum score might have been a passing mark, but my best guess would have to be that 90% of students in his class had a 90% average if not better! Mr. H was my favorite teacher for these reasons, but he was special too because I am a very dark-skinned aboriginal woman (with a brain-I hope!) and in 1988 Saskatoon Canada, racism of Indians was something to advertise - not hide. I had heard students make derogatory, racist remarks to Mr. H and about him, yet he never let anything like that physically 'show' - he didn't let it get under his skin, a true "educated" man. So I do also actually Value him and the valuable lessons he taught me by his own ways of showing how to deal with the closed-minded and closed-hearted people.

My favorite teacher was my 3rd grade teacher. I was a newbie to the country and she always made me feel special and included, even if I didn't have command of the English language.
