You will need to have proof of citizenship and photgraphic proof of your identity, period. The simplest means of doing so is to have your passport with you (if you are flying, you MUST have it).

If you are intending on returning to the US after visiting Canada, you may want to take a close look at your US visa application and stamp; it may not be suitable for 'multiple entry'. If this is the case, you would need to reapply for a visa to return to the US.

If you enter Canada, the customs officials at the border have the right to:
- request proof of identification (see first paragraph)
- stamp your passport with a date of entry and
- give you a tourist visa of some duration
- or refuse you entry to the country.

It does not mean that they WILL actually stamp your passport, but seeing as how your passport is not Canadian or US in origin, it is highly likely that they will do so.

Yes, international visitors generally require a valid passport to enter or transit Canada. If you were a US citizen or perm. resident, then you wouldn't need one right now (unless traveling between Canada and US by air). Being that you are a UK citizen, you will need your passport as it will make entry much easier for you. Additionally, they do not always stamp them upon entry.
Word of advice, enter into Niagara Falls via the Rainbow Bridge (if it's convenient) rather than the Peace Bridge (if traveling by land), as the Falls are right there when you cross the bridge and I feel that the immigration officers who work at that bridge are nicer. Just an observation.
Take care and have a nice trip.

Yes you do need a passport. But if you have one that you used to come to the US there really is no problem. And it will be stamped again.

Now wether or not you will get a new visa for a certain amount of months again or the one you have now and the time will count off of it is the question. So it kind of depends on what you want to do and why you would be bothered by a new stamp. If in doubt I would just skip the trip.

Six months ago, you might not have needed worry to take your passport; for someone visiting the US, I'm not sure... but from what I understand, even US citizens will need them to go to Canada now.

Yes, you will need it. I am not sure if they will stamp it with a re-entry date.
