It is one of the ten commandments: "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain."
It is good to call upon God in prayer and it is good to speak of God in religious conversation. But to just say his name when the thought is not really about him is considered a sin.
I look at it like this, if people were going around exclaiming my name in such a way, it would get very annoying as I would turn to look to see what they wanted when they didn't really want anything at all.

Unless you are begining a prayer, you should not be uttering the Lord's name. This is consistant with the 3rd commandment from God in the book of Exodus. It's a bad habit along with the usage of "damn it". It is using the Lord's name as a curse or description of anger. Try to retrain yourself to say "Oh my word" or "Oh my goodness". Words are powerful things....have you heard about the secret? It's not really religious, but points out how our words do have power and energy. Use your powers for good and not evil.

Look at verse 7. It's the 3rd commandment. You are not only offending christians, but also jews and muslims and anyone else who believes in the God with a capital G.
exodus 20:2-20:17
2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; 3you shall have no other gods before* me.
4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, 6but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation* of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.
8 Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. 9For six days you shall labour and do all your work. 10But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. 11For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it.
12 Honour your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
13 You shall not murder.*
14 You shall not commit adultery.
15 You shall not steal.
16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
17 You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.

Some people see this kind of comment as taking the Lord's name in vain. I don't know if God sees it that way, but I do know that if it is offending some one God would probably not want you doing it.

Be it meant as to our God or not, it is a very demeaning word to say, especially when Christians hear it. We do not take God’s name lightly; His name is to be honored & sanctified. It also just hurts & irks us that only God’s name is put to vain, but Buddha’s & Confucius’ and the other false gods do not have such devaluing expressions.

It's a violation of a Commandment, the one not to take the Lord's name in vain.

Because we are not to take the name of God in vain.
Now if you have not been born from above, the most important thing, and what is to be considered before wondering if saying, 'O God', is right or wrong or not, is being born from above. Unless you are saved from your sins, you may never be able to stop cursing. For taking God's name in vain is a form of cursing.

Because you are to call on God for praising and asking for blessings.
Saying "Oh my God" in belittling the title and name of the creator of all. Much like the title god given to idols and imaginary superheroes.
