generally a county (in the US and some other countries) is a subdivion of either a state or province. For example, I live in New Haven County in the state of Connecticut in the USA. England and Scotland are historical geographic divsions of the 'country' known as the UK.

Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales are all seperate COUNTRIES. A COUNTY is a division of a country.

a county is like a state in america-its a division of a country to make seperate areas like hertsfordshire, bedfordshire etc. each county has differnet news stories, events etc.

No, they are countries. Counties are between state and town/shire/municipality in size. It's just a way to create jobs and inefficiency by making another level of middle management in American government.

In other countries, it is referred to as provinces.
