I just had someone quote 2: Tim 3:7 as a reason not to learn and study texts outside the Bible.

Don’t you see what is wrong with celebrating ignorance?

Can you please explain this to me?

I've seen this many times. Look at the first answer. So this is far and away from just a one off experience.

For me I would say it depends on what things that you would want to study outside of the Bible.

In 2 Timothy 3:7 it speaks about women who seek all kinds of information but never seem to arrive at truth. These women are weak in that they will believe anything.

You need to be a very strong person in what you believe in to be able to read other kinds of material. Especially those who believe different than you do. For some of the information may have truth but there may be also error in it.

I don't believe a true Christian defends ignorance as a virtue. I just think we pick and choose what we read and study.

That scripture is not an invitation to or a celebration of ignorance.

The Apostle Paul was referring to spiritual knowledge. He was talking about people that were always on a quest for truth and looking in the wrong places. Getting nowhere. It's good advice today when "truth" comes at us from all different directions.

The Apostle Paul himself was a highly educated man who gave up a lucrative profession... that of a lawyer... to pursue a higher calling.

(by the way no JW would have made such a comment)

That is not what Christians believe. This person was taking a passage, and misusing it to back up what they were wanting to say. I read many books outside the Bible. I read all the time. Many Believers read a lot. It's not the doctrine of the church, that person was misinformed or misled. It's not what the Bible is saying.

I read the Scripture text in general and it says nothing about not studying texts outside the Bible. Of course, I don't know what you mean by that. It depends on what you want to read.

If you want to read a book about Scotland, for instance, then that's probably just fine..Enjoy

Sadly, ignorance is present in every group, even Christians. This person is using this passge incorrectly. This passage is not talking about Christians, but those who seek worldly knowledge without seeking God as well. For instance those who condemn the bible without studying it for themselves.(sorry) This passage is talking about people who seek only the knowledge that they want to believe instead of seeking knowledge of all kinds and balancing and comparing everything they learn to find the truth.

The Christian does not suffer from an accumulation of knowledge, only the misuse and misapplication of that knowledge.

the real distinction is a few small differentiations in the bible translations and particular classic perception's. i'm considered a crib catholic(born catholic) and characteristic additionally attended non-denominational hundreds with some acquaintances. the main considerable distinction i've got constantly observed is the shortcoming of deep classic varieties. Catholics have classic songs and methods of appearing mass that are "strict" and 1000's of years old, on an identical time as the nondenominational % to throw in "Christian Rock" or "Rap" and different issues, that's good in its very own way. The catholics often say "Our way or the line" on an identical time as nondenominational tend to declare "O.ok., in case you think of so". Now in case you elect to evaluate Catholic to greater cutting-edge denominational church homes including Lutherans and Methodists, and etc., then the great ameliorations lay in the old information and, as quickly as lower back, the bible. the only reason those church homes got here into being is because of the fact the catholic church replaced into at one element corrupt for the time of a era while the people depended on it. There are additionally some philosophical ameliorations additionally, such because of the fact the lutheran church believes that every physique is born with the spectacular into heaven, yet they should lose it to bypass to hell. Then the Catholic church believes which you ought to earn your thank you to heaven by using living an entire completely good natured existence. there are various different minor information, and an excellent variety of of those have been in basic terms examples, yet for a short answer it is what i assumed could be good to grant you. additionally, if every physique unearths this answer offensive, I make an apology, because of the fact I by way of no potential meant this to offend. additionally keep in mind, i'm 15.

If ignorance leads you to heaven and knowledge leads you to hell, then of course ignorance is a virtue. I would rather be ignorant and be saved by Jesus than the most knowledgeable person in the world and have Jesus torturing me in hell. Jesus wants followers not teachers. If something isn't written in the bible how can it be worth learning?

again..a scripture taken out of context to prove a point.

1This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

6For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

7Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Verse one relates to verse 7, which is talking about the spirit of the age during the end times, before the return of Christ.
It is saying, that these types of people will exist (I see them now) who are forever learning facts...

But Never learn the Truth!

That scripture does not say not to study any other books. It just says that the Bible is the truth. You can study whatever you want but when it comes to God the Bible is the truth and any book that teaches against what is in the Bible is not the truth.
