Kind of an odd question. Nobody NEEDS to speak English, but it sure helps for employment reasons. The US gained control over the Philipenes after the Spanish-American war. The US held the colony for 50 years and decided it wasn't financially worth it to keep it and allowed it independence just after WWII. The Philipenes has many different dialects and Tagalog is actually very similar to Spanish due to centuries of Spanish leaders. The Philipenes spoke English under American control and continued to use it as the language of instruction for the next 40 years. It was only recently under a nationalism campaign that they decided to start teaching and having government functions etc in Tagalog. Most can still speak English though

They don't! That is unless they want to understand what an English speaking person is saying or which to make conversation with an English speaking person. It is always a benefit if a person can speak more than one language. One last think to converse or ask question on Yahoo Answers English seems to be the widely used language so it sure would benefit one if they wanted to use this feature.

My Filipino friends tell me that many companies conduct business in English and schools teach it. Many Filipino people do not have the job opportunities at home as they do it the US. Many study hard in school so they know enough English to come to the US and send money to family back home.
