you can buy a legal key from microsoft, then replace the one on your system with the legal one - see this for information:

I have a "legal" copy of Windows 2000. Sometimes Microsoft recognizes that fact, sometimes not. Whenever I want to download something from MS, they check the authenticity of my operating system. Most of the time, it passes, however, once in a while it doesn't. Try this simple test for yourself. Download something from MS and you will be quickly told if your legal or not. You just don't really know what they may do though.
Try reinstalling the Windows, but, I don't think that will do it. Be safe, buy your operating system from a reputable vendor.

If it IS genuine, you shouldn't have a problem. Where did you buy your copy at?

If you bought a used PC or something like that and you have no idea whether your copy of Windows is legit, then you need to buy a new copy. Go to newegg.com or another PC parts retailer and look for their OEM copies of Windows. They should require you to purchase hardware with the operating system as part of the OEM price, but it's worth the savings.

Pick a new hard drive or dvd burner or something you can use as part of the hardware purchase.

If you bought your system from a retail store, DON'T TOUCH IT! Take it back and ask them to install a genuine copy of Microsoft Windows.

If they won't do that, go to the website listed below...

Well you can register it with microsoft, but thats if you have a real CD key. If it is your copy, try to reinstall it and reregister it and see if that works. If not you might have to buy a new one.
