Surgical Procedure: The surgical procedure phase for a jaw augmentation begins after the anesthesia is administered. Monitoring pads are attached prior to beginning the surgery to allow the surgical team to monitor vital statistics during the operation. During the procedure, the surgeon will carefully follow the pre-marked incision lines. Depending on the type of procedure, the surgery may involve separating the skin and the muscle from the skull, removing excess skin or fat, and placing implants in an ideal location. The implant may be either screwed or sutured into place. In some instances, the facial implant may not be secured. In this case, the patient will have to wear a head wrap designed to keep the implant in place until the surrounding collagen secures the implant.
After the surgical actions have been taken, but before the incisions are closed, the surgical team will perform a sponge and instrument count. Once all of the materials are accounted for, the incisions are closed by applying tissue glue or using sutures and staples. A dressing is then applied to protect the wounds, keep the tissue securely in place and reduce swelling.

How the heck are they going to raise your upper jaw and move it back? That's part of your skull, for Pete's sake!
Anyway, good luck! You are going to be sucking your food through a straw for the next few days. Still, I've heard pureed fish & chips taste great!

Make sure you drink plenty of water before surgery right up to the time they told you not to eat the day before. Did the surgeon explain procedure? I guess not since your asking, I don't want to scare you, its better that the MD doing it explains his/hers procedure because there are a couple of whys to do it depending on the complexity of a case. With any bone surgery swelling and pain are a given, you will probably be on a great pain med. Best of Luck, hang in there the results will be worth that new smile.

You'll be put to sleep by the anesthesiologist ...all you'll remember about the procedure is that someone started an iv and maybe asked you to count backwards from 100....you got to about 98.
Then you woke up and your jaw felt 3 times larger than normal and you get good pain meds to make it bearable and go back to sleep.

You will be given a pre-op prior to being taken to theatre that is supposed to sedate and relax you. Maybe a penicillin jab in the bottom. Depending on the hospital they may wheel you to theatre while you are still awake. But the staff are normally very nice and try to put you at ease. I had teeth taken out in hospital when I was about 15. I remember getting the needle in my hand to put me to sleep and being asked to count to 100 and of course you never reach past 10. You will be fine, try not to worry! It beats the dentist!!
