I assume you are talking about the chemical compounds known as acids. If you meant the hallucinogenic drug, I can't tell you from experience but it causes hallucinations and paranoia, and extended use leads to brain cell death and mental impairment.

Anyhow, about acids. It depends upon the acid. Acids in general are corrosive, but some are more corrosive than others. Being burned with acid does NOT mean that you will die. Usually, what happens is that somebody spills some acid on themselves in the laboratory (phosphoric, sulfuric, hydrochloric, etc), immediately runs to the wash basin and washes it off, and that's it. Maybe a little redness but that's all.

However, if you get a strong acid on your skin and don't wash it off, it can damage your skin. Hydrochloric and sulfuric are two common strong acids that can be dangerous. If you don't immediately wash it off, it will damage the skin much like a burn will. The extent and severity depends on the amount of skin exposed, the length of time exposed, and the concentration of the acidic solution. Also note that stronly basic solutions can be corrosive as well. I have some scars on my hand from using a strongly basic solution to clean my deck. I should have worn the proper gloves.

One notable acid to discuss here is Hydrofluoric Acid. Now, THIS is an acid that can kill you. Exposure to HF acid is insidious, as it soaks into your skin and you can't really feel anything until it's much too late. The HF acid combines with minerals in your tissue, causing tissue death and organ damage. HF will eventually make its way to the bone and begin dissolving it. Exposure of concentrated HF to just a small part of your body (5% of your skin area) can kill you if you don't get immediate medical treatment.

If you're asking from a food point of view in regard to ingesting acid based foods;

Balanced body chemistry is of utmost importance for the maintenance of health and correction of disease. Acidosis, or over-acidity in the body tissues, is one of the basic causes of many diseases, especially the arthritic and rheumatic diseases.
All foods are "burned" in the body--more commonly called "digested"-- leaving an ash as the result of the "burning", or the digestion. This food ash can be neutral, acid or alkaline, depending largely on the mineral composition of the foods. Some foods leave an acid residue or ash, some alkaline. The acid ash (acidosis) results when there is a depletion of the alkali reserve or the diminution in the reserve supply of fixed bases in the blood and the tissues of the body.

It is, therefore, vitally important that there is a proper ratio between acid and alkaline foods in the diet. The natural ratio in a normal healthy body is approximately 4 to 1 -- four parts alkaline to one part acid, or 80% to 20%. When such an ideal ratio is maintained, the body has a strong resistance against disease. In the healing of disease, when the patient usually has acidosis, the higher the ratio of alkaline elements in the diet, the faster will be the recovery. Alkalis neutralize the acids. Therefore in the treatment of most diseases it is important that the patient's diet includes plenty of alkaline-ash foods to offset the effects of acid-forming foods and leave a safe margin of alkalinity.

A healthy body usually keeps large alkaline reserves which are used to meet the emergency demands if too many acid-producing foods are consumed. But these normal reserves can be depleted. When the alkaline-acid ratio drops to 3 to 1, health can be seriously menaced. Your body can function normally and sustain health only in the presence of adequate alkaline reserves and the proper acid-alkaline ratio in all the body tissues and the blood.

Personally, i think your talking about LSD or d-lysergic acid diethylamine. LSD is an extremely potent hallucinogenic, active within the microgram range (millionths of a gram). Clinical pharmacology states that LSD is a serotogenic agonist. Although not much is known about the cause of its effects, it can be reported that LSD causes much neurological activity in the brain. LSD causes visual hallu., not in the sense of seeing objects that arent really there, yet offers the environment in a different view. Objects seem to move before your eyes. Straight lines seem to turn to wiggly ones. Buildings look as if they are fluxing or swaying. Some geometric patterning is observed under high doseages. I believe the most negative effects to be the ones on the mind. This isnt an easy going drug. It takes it toll on your mind, sometimes giving you schizophrenic thoughts, stress, feeling difficulty being in your body, and anxiety. And it lasts about 12 hours. Hope this answers your question. And if you ever hear of someone taking acid and seeing objects that arent there, they are lying, punch them in the face, and tell them to stop spreading rumors.

Acid in food answer given by Mary R is scientific nonsense. There are conditions called acidosis and alkalinosis, but they are not caused by acid or alkaline residues from digestion. The idea that you can treat diseases with alkaline-ash foods has no basis in reality.
