A police report is merely one of the tools that helps in evaluating an accident. If you have coverage, and I'm assuming this was an at fault accident, collision will cover your damage, less any deductible of course. Ask your agent.

it is always best to get a police report i think the only time you you do not have to have one is if you hit a deer

Yes, it should do, if you are fully comp. The only other thing to do is give your insurance company a call and ask.
