So they can charge and arm and a leg for "designer" breeds who are basically mixes with cute names. Also, many people breed just because they happen to have a couple of dogs and they think it would be really neat to have puppies. Hardly a good reason to bring lives into the world.
And no, sticking breed A and breed B together to get breed C, without a standard or any “quality control” is not how breeds are developed, and I don’t know where people got this idea or why they keep spreading this misinformation.
This total lack of a standard or any quality control is why these designer breeds will never be “real” breeds.
For instance:
-A standard poodle X golden retriever is considered a golden doodle.
-A miniature poodle X golden retriever is considered a golden doodle.
-A standard poodle X golden doodle is considered a golden doodle.
-A miniature poodle X golden doodle is considered a golden doodle.
-A golden retriever X golden doodle is considered a golden doodle.
--A golden doodle X a golden doodle is considered a golden doodle
-A ½ golden retriever ½ golden doodle X a golden retriever is considered a golden doodle
-A ½ standard poodle ½ golden doodle X a golden retriever is considered a golden doodle
Etc. etc. until the end of time.
This is not how you create a breed.

Because they want to make money. For some reason there is a rise in demand for the 'hybrid dogs.' Probably because they are cute, have a cute name, and these breeders claim ridiculous things, like, 'these dogs don't shed, no allergies, they don't bark, they are really smart." When they are actually just mixed breed dogs who have been given a cute name and a High price tag. It bothers me, and I wish it would stop. People who are paying $500 for an "Basschshund" could find the same mixed breed dog in a shelter, for much cheaper, AND they are saving a dog's life.
Someone mentioned that Shelters jack up prices on designer dogs and pure breeds. I just wanted to add that I have worked with MANY animal shelters and rescue groups. In all of the shelters that I have worked with, the price depends on what the dog needs. An adult dog who comes in with all it's vaccines and is already altered has a lower adoption fee. A dog or puppy who has been given vaccines, altred by the shelter, or given any other medical care by the shelter has a higher adoption fee to cover these costs, so they shelter can help the next animals that come in. I have never heard of a shelter who raises prices on more desirable dogs. I'm sure there are some out there who do this, but I have never seen them do this.

They are called designer breeds. Silly people will breed any two dogs, give it a combination of both names and rort other silly people out of their money that they could have bought a real pedigreed pup with for less, with all it's history, genetic screening and most vet work done and with a good guarantee and support. It's a money making scam.
Those who are in it to make new registerable breeds do so at great cost to themselves, doing genetic screening and with a breeding program registered with their kennel club, they're not just throwing dogs together.
Cross a shihtzu and a poodle, what do you get? Shihtpoo.
I have to agree that breeders who do it "right" are preserving the breed and trying to improve it and doing it with the animal's interests at heart.

As Amanda stated very correctly too, may I add, sticking 2 breeds does not make a better breed. That sort of WRONG information has been going around for years. It is the work of greedy people who are only interested in money and the idiots who buy them and keep the greedy people in business. What the end result is, is a MUTT with no predictability whatsoever in any of its inherent traits and most of the time a dog that will end up at the pound. As long as there is ignorance in the world, people will keep breeding the same, and more crap, and give it cute names so that the idiotic part of the population will spend big money and buy.

Mixing the traits of two breeds can produce dogs who are better for people with allergies; dogs that do not shed; dogs that take the best of both or all their parent's breed components.
Why not just get a mixed breed dog from the Humane Society? Lots cheaper and just as good; plus if you adopt an older dog then you do not have to house train them.

Contrary to the misinformation provided by groups whose interests are solely the adoption of shelter animals the truth of the matter is that these steps are taken by breeders for a variety of reasons and no one breeder can just be lumped into them all.
*money
*prestige
*curiousity
*new breed development
& more.
Contrary to what many would be rescuers are answering on this question, you almost always CANNOT find similar mixes in shelters because if they do find their way there they are adopted far quicker than those big black lab mixes that came about. Our local HS will also jack up prices on these dogs and even had a bid war going on when a female english bulldog with tumors on her nipples was presented to them.
In any case, please spay and neuter your PETS, as it is owners who do not that are adding to the pet overpopulation problem.
In any case if breeders STOPPED ALL BREEDING, the domestic dog would be extinct, and the sweet slobbering mixed breed mongrels would still meet their demise in the gas chambers as most folks would continue to not want these dogs.

They are mixing the pure bred dogs because they want to make more money and mixing is illegal but when the government approves the dog then it will be legal.
Right now there are Morkies around and they are a mix of Yorkies and Maltese and the dogs are illegal for now and the government is doing the research on them.

People are willing to pay lots of money for "Designer Dogs" (which used to be mutts!!!) I think that's what the mixing really comes down to.

Isn't that how we originally got the breeds we have? They are trying to make a new breed. Also, excessive pure breeding causes problems like hip dysplasia, etc. By cross-breeding, they are trying to get the strengths of each breed and eliminate the weaknesses.
